Metallic Rattle/ Knocking Noise
« on: 31 January 2008, 10:55 »
Guys, this has bugged me for a while, but seems to have gotton worse now.

I have a metallic sounding rattle/knocking on my car.  Its noticable when:

- I first start up (but that could be linked to the next point)
- I blip the throttle slightly (800 -> 1200 rpm)
- When I go over a bump in the road.

Any ideas?  Someone once said its the middle exhaust bracket.  Is this correct?

What choices do I have?  Also, what else could it be?  Really starting to bug me.

Most likely to be your exhaust bracket if not check engine mounts.
Will always love my mk4 but she had to go...225 Quattro TT in its place....but its still black (she lives on in spirit!)

How can I check those without a ramp?

Where is the exhaust bracket located (where abouts on the exhaust should I be looking)

You could also try any heat sheilds too.

could be the cat heat shield, the spotwelds crack and makes a tinny rattle at certain rpms, fairly common

edit: someone beat me to it ^

Is it just a case of squeezing under the car and trying to rattle the heat sheild round the cat, and the one at the back of the engine bay?

If it is this, is a re-weld the only way to fix it?

What if its the exhaust bracket?

Get a trusted friend to sit in the car and give it a rev while you listen.

If its a heat shield just rip it off. Thats what iv done.

If its the rubber mount i think you can get another. if its the bracket its self you need a welder i think.

Get under the car and have someone start it, see if you can locate the source. if its the exhaust bracket, just grab a new one from GSF or eurocarparts. If its the heat shield, you can either get someone to put a couple of weld spots next to the broken ones, try bodging it with some exhaust sealant paste, or just rip the heat shield off altogether (just don't park on tall dry grass when the exhaust is hot  )

So is the heat shield located between the cat and the road?

I thought the heat shield would be above the cat, so it would be between the exhuast and the underneath of the car?
