My Dad has always thrashed his cars from new (But once fully warmed up) and never had any problems with engines. His old 1.6 GL+ MKIV escort eventually found it's way into my ownership as my first car and it was quicker than my mates XR3i and it had covered 180,000 miles!!!

We're only up to 300 miles so far, and we've decided not to worry about it too much (save for giving it a good chance to warm up of course before any revs). We'll hold off from stretching its legs in anger till 1000km, but for 95% of the time we're just driving it like we normally would anyway. Even poking the revs just above 4000rpm unleashes a lovely whoosh of useful power for accelerating on to a motorway etc., and I keep being amazed at how often the DSG has sneaked the car into 6th without me noticing, even at quite low speeds.

I believe that the engine if run in lazily (ie low revs) then the pistons arent pushed to the extend of their stroke, and so can lead to lip creation in the cylinder bore thus not allowing full power generation in later life as the pistons then need to overcome this lip.

Not quite, the pistons will travel exactly the same distance up and down the bore regardless of the engine speed. You may be thinking about the compression rings not being pushed outwards into the bore? If you molly coddle an engine in it's early days you dont generate much pressure in the cylinders, you need this pressure to push the rings outwards into the bore, helping them settle in. Thats why short sharp bursts of acceleration are the order of the day, using what ever revs suit at that given time, you put a bit of load on the engine but not for long enough to cause a build up of heat hence why you should try to avoid labouring the engine in a high car ie going up hill or prolonged high speed runs. I had mine past 5k within 50 miles and frequently let the revs climb up that high and beyond, i've got about 800 on it now and i think nothing of using 5.5k or 6k occasionally while i'm on back roads etc.
Running an engine in is not simply a case of keeping the revs below X amount then once you've done 1000 miles you can all of a sudden kick its head in? The engine will then experience speeds and loads it's never seen before.

The iPod prep is rubbish.  My RCD300 (2008 car) can play MP3s and displays the track names and I have started to use that more that the iPod.  I should have gone for the CD changer instead but I don't know if that is MP3 compatible.

Hi

You can buy a thingymajig that connects to your iPod and then acts as a radio transmitter - then just tune your radio in to the FM frequency that the transmitter broadcasts at, and you're using your iPod in the car!

Comments regarding running in greatly appreciated - am awaiting my brand new Ed30 (should be arriving beginning of March - ordered it in November so you can imagine I'm a bit desparate by now!) I've gone a bit silly with the options so the extra 30bhp should come in useful ...

Cheers

Hi - good luck with the Edition 30! Not too long now

We used to have an ipod radio transmitter - it was called 'itrip'. It was rubbish.  The sound quality was poor at the best of times - its signal was so weak that the radio didn't pick it up very well unless you wedged it into the glove box in a certain way, and trying to find a band without interference from radio stations was nigh on impossible. You think you'd found one, then travel 100 miles up the road and it would start getting interference again.

Add to that the fact that it doesn't charge up your ipod so half the time it switches off because the battery's flat, all I can say is steer clear! Nothing beats a bit of copper between the devices. (Haven't tried bluetooth either, but really, what a lot of faff that stuff ends up being)

Try the itrip with built in car charger, its ten times better than the itrip that plugs staright into the bottom of your ipod, charges constantly and has a much better signal.  I use it when I go truck driving at weekends and the only place I find the signal is bad is on the topside of the M25, everywhere else is fine , the most useful gadget I've ever purchased!

Hello every one,

this is my first post as I have been lurking for some time

I am currently saving up for my deposit and learning so much from you guys

I was planning on going for the ipod prep as an option but after reading this thread i think i am gonna go for hte AUX connection (£25) which will run any external audio source into the cars stereo (Ipod through the headphone socket). I assume then the ipod works as normal!
