Help with audio system in Mk2 Golf please
« on: 23 January 2008, 23:31 »
Hi, need help with choosing a system in my Mk2 Golf. I'm looking at a JBL components system (6.5") to go in my front audioscape door pods, along with a JL audio amp. However, I don't know what to run in the back, JBL 6x9's with an amp, or a sub with an amp? What are the advantages of each? I mostly listen to dance music, with quite a lot of bass, so I'm shifting towards buying a sub, just want to make sure this is the right decision though. If I were to go down the route of a sub, what size would be best, I'm thinking 10" or 12"  :undecided: and have you any recommendations?

Many Thanks

Sub wise dance is fast so a 10" or 8" would be better as it moves faster to keep up and is punchy, whereas a 12" is more for low down dirty bass!

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

I have 2 12's in mine and they handle anything. fast, slow, basy and punchy. If you like bass you might be a bit dissapointed with 10's.

Also, you dont need 6x9s. They are pants. If its a toss up between 6x9s and nothing, go for nothing as some recomend nothing in the back anyway.

Just wondered why you're going for JBL speakers? As with getting a JL amp, they'll be letting it down a bit! Some JL, Rainbow, Focal, Boston acoutics, Hertz or DLS components will be much better.

Like said a sub will be much better than 6x9's. A 10" will be fine if you get decent power to it from an amp. One will be fine, but two even better, but of course more money!

I've got a brand new Phoenix gold 500w mono amp for sale which is ideal for a sub if yo're interested?! £110 cheaper than at Car audio security!

It's a bit of a misconception that smaller subs play faster than larger ones.  It's more to do with the installation and tuning than driver size.  A sealed 12" would most likely sound tighter and more accurate than a ported 10.

More to do with the amount of room you are prepared to sacrifice.  A sealed 10 would be nice and tight, and take up minimal space.  Obviously an 8 would be smaller still, but also considerably quieter.
