I've seen a thread on this before - the consensus view was that you should use the VW recommended additive.
Reasons were :-
1. Water alone could freeze this time of year & not clean the scum off your windscreen
2. The VW Mk V fan jets are very fine and can get blocked - the VW stuff keeps these clean
3. Other additives do not do as good a job as VW stuff
The Audi/VW/SeatSkoda recommended stuff is not expensive anyway and can be got at any of the dealers with a parts department. If you don't like VW get it at Audi
