Excuse my stupidity...........my light is flashing saying that washer liquid is low.....

Do I put JUST water in there or is there some kind of expensive liquid that will do a better job? If so, where can I get it from?

I can't be ar$ed to phone VW as I don't like them

I've seen a thread on this before - the consensus view was that you should use the VW recommended additive.

Reasons were :-

1.  Water alone could freeze this time of year & not clean the scum off your windscreen
2.  The VW Mk V fan jets are very fine and can get blocked - the VW stuff keeps these clean
3.  Other additives do not do as good a job as VW stuff

The Audi/VW/SeatSkoda recommended stuff is not expensive anyway and can be got at any of the dealers with a parts department. If you don't like VW get it at Audi

Halfords normally have 3 for 2 on washer fluids; you can get concentrated which you dilute in water or ready mixed.  I go for the concetrated stuff; seems to do the job and leaves the screen smear free

just buy some decent concentrate like Holts from Halfords or somewhere, and theres instructions on how to mix on the side, slightly more for winter use etc...

Used Halfords concentrate with the fan jets on my Mkiv and Mkv. No problems. Mind you the VW lemon screen wash did smell nice......

I use Autoglym Quick clear screenwash from any good car parts stockist like halfords.

http://www.autoglym.co.uk/enGB/product-proddetail.asp?v06VQ=GM&Range=1

diluted down alot, dose the job great and is smear free also smells nice to, not like some of the cheaper stuff that smells like marzipan

Is there any way to turn the warning off without having to fill the washers?

I found myself on a 200 mile journey and after about 50 miles the warning came on.
It was a reasonable day - so I didnt really need washer fluid... so I didnt want to stop.
After about 20 miles I had to pull over and fill them with Volvic - just cause the flashing yellow thing on my highline was annoying me so much!!!!

Ideally there would be something I could do to disable it until I either fill it - or at least switch the engine off.  Its very distracting!

I bought halfords ready to use washer fluid.  Not the concentrate. Haven't used it yet but assume it will be fine
