There's a 'how to' on this very site as it happens:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33251.0 (d'oh horney beat me to it!!!)

Contrary to what everybody says it's not actually that difficult, just take your time and expect a few shredded knuckles and scratched arms.
When I did one I also took both front seats out just to make life easier and give me more room to work in.
Good luck, I've got to do another one in a couple of weeks!!!

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

besides scratched knuckles etc, expect LOTS of swearing and back ache from being led upside down in the footwells trying to get the heater box out (or more importantly, back in again)

be careful not to misalign the bolts (x2) from the heater box through the bulkhead, too much aggression on refitting the heater box and they'll snap the back of the heater box... no more bolt!

as said above it is simple enough (in theory) but you wont want to do another!!

I don't think a semi will give the same results

think in advance........

the sponge thats stuck to all the doors within ya heater box that diverts the air to differant areas of the car (screen, feet, fwd blowers etc) is bound to be wrecked and pretty much useless. get some before you start and get busy with some doublesided carpet tape once youve got the heater box out.

having a fully working heater blower direction control will be doubley satisfying

ITS A TRAP!

Hi
Do you have a photo of this door and the hot/cold door.
If not, have you seen one anywhere or can you draw one. Cheers.

I'll give you a tip, take the dash out!  it makes the job much easier, no lying upside down in the footwell is required then, and also take off the ENTIRE airbox assembly including the blower fan unit, dont f**k about trying to split the 2, it makes for a lot more hassle.  To get the blower off isd only an extra couple of nuts in the bay area, plus some fixings up near the fan.  Oh and done mess about removing the staples from the blower ducting, and dont unclip any of the heater knob controls, just unscrew the control knob unit from the dash and pull it out along with the heater box!

Also while the dash is out you can check the screen demist ducting for damage, on my mates MK2 it had all come away from the dash resulting in poor demister performance.  A bit of glue and some clamps and its much better!

To get the dash out you gotta remove all the switches, the heater controls and the dash surround, plus 2 nuts in the scuttle area, a bolt at either end and 2 more under the dash near the centre console.  All the undertrays and console have to come out too.
