LED DASH LIGHTS
« on: 14 January 2008, 15:59 »
Hi, am new to the MK2 thing and am after some advice. I've got a couple of blown dashboard display lights and was thinking of putting in leds when i do change them. can anyone tell me what sort of leds i'll need?? Also, where can i get replacement headlamps from, the guy in Halfords assured me that they only had lamps with two connectors as opposed to three, sorry if all this is a bit noddy to most people.

many thanks

I got a headlamp on ebay to replace a cracked one, was cheap and in excellent condition!

As for leds you might want to try www.ultraleds.com. You will need to either use 12v leds or use standard leds and solder in a 12v resistor (on either leg) or your leds won't light! Be sure to get the led the correct way round as well, solder pos leg to pos terminal and vice versa.

The wide angled frosted variety are good as they spread the light out (or get normal and file the tip down). They come in a variety of colours and different brightnesses so it's good to try out different ones to get the right look.

The elec window switches are a bastard to do (or I found they were - dificult to get back together properly). I gave up on them and bought new switches! But have experience of this as did all the lights in my fiesta with blue ones, a bit chavvy I know but it was fun to do!

Should be able to get the headlights from GSF, Euro car parts or the main delaers for standard or other places for crystal ones. Cheaper of course 2nd hand from a breakers, ebay or to a 'wanted' add on here or any other VW forum.

Its the actual bulb itself that i'm after. my current bulbs have three connector tags on and could only find ones with two tags in halfords.

Go back to halfords, call the guy a dick from a fellow halfords worker (I work for the company), and ask for a 472 bulb. They are the headlight bulbs. (unless you mean a inner spot bulb, in which case they are 453)

What leds have you seen on fleabay? Sometimes they can be a right royal rip off (leds should be pennies)...

I've bought lots of leds from Ultra-leds before. What colour ones are you after?
