Sub - 2 channel amp or mono?
« on: 09 January 2008, 00:12 »
Hey guys,
Some of you may recall that in a previous thread I bought http://www.bassjunkies.com/index.php?pid=39131&show=expand_image

Well, seen as though I can't install it yet due to a sh!te head unit I've been looking at getting a better amp for it, and possibly using the 2 channel one supplied for my 6x9s or something.

The thing is though, is it best to get a mono amp, or could I still get decent performance off a 2 channel one so that I can possibly add another sub in the future? The only thing that has sparked this is I've seen a setup similar to how I'd like mine (http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/images/324107-6.jpg)

For instance... that amp has 2x750W.. surely enough to power my sub, + another? And for only £75, I think it seems very reasonable... However, is this going to be crap performance too, or will it make a fairly decent system?

Thanks in advance..

Yes its best to get a mono amp, it will power subs much better than a 2 channel. you can run 2 subs from a mono amp as long as you wire them correctly and show the amp the load it needs to see. Have a look at this little gadget on the rockford website. punch your sub details in and it ll show you the correct wireing. 2 x 4ohm subs will show either a 2 or an 8 ohm load when wired to a mono so if you choose to go that way best look at a 2 ohm stable amp.

For 2 of the subs you show you should be looking at the very least a 600Watt RMS amp. As for amps, you get what you pay for. Cheeper amps arent very efficient thus turning most of the current into heat and not much into sound. depends on how much brass you want to put into the system.

Hope all of that makes sense.

EDIT: Just had a look at the pistonheads link.

Generally speaking, subs work best when pointed towards the rear of the vehicle.

By all means go for a mono amp, but bear in mind that you'll only ever be able to use it on a sub. Mono amps are often class D, which although more efficient, can be less accurate in terms of sound quality at higher frequencies (which obviously doesn't matter when powering subs).

I currently use a 2-channel bridged (only 300w rms), but I know that I can also use it as a front-end amp if necessary.

So, do you think that bassjunkies 2 channel amp is worth while getting?

IMO its not worth it as you will want to upgrade at some point thus spending more money in the long run.

It it rather worrying that there are no RMS figures with that amp. Max figures are misleading to say the least. To produce that power @ 4OHM is asking a lot of the amp. You would probably better wireing them to show a 2 ohm load and getting a 2ohm stable amp.

IMO you would be better off saving a bit longer and getting something like this

http://www.bassjunkies.com/?pid=31465&show_my_car=&return_link=%2Findex.php%3Fq%3DAmplifiers%2FMono+Amplifiers&source=subcategory

550Watt RMS @ 2OHM

Or maybe this

http://www.bassjunkies.com/?pid=30684&show_my_car=&return_link=%2Findex.php%3Fq%3DAmplifiers%2FMono+Amplifiers&source=subcategory

580 watts RMS @ 2 ohms

Both amps are a near exact match for your subs so if you decide to go that way make sure you take that into account and dont crank the gains up too far.

Would be worth the extra cash. Trying to produce 275w x2 @ 4ohms is going to be expensive.

Hope that helps
