the oil light flashing prob
« on: 07 January 2008, 15:36 »
picked up my new mk2 16v the other and when i got home had a look around it and one of the oil pressure switches was unplugged so i plugged it back on, well this put the oil light on and no buzzer so i got 2 new switches and changed them both and put on new connectors and it turned the light out  until i blipped the throttle and it came again but no buzzer WTF. I dont know what else to check as the car has just had the oil done and had a recon engine put in 20k ago so i would think its not the oil pump  :undecided:.The light does go out when revs are below 1000rpm but take it over that and it comes back on but no buzzer. any help would be great thanks

just put a new pump on still got the light on    the engine does sound better now. if revs are below 1k then no light but touch the pedal and light comes on and also i have a pressure test and all is fine so fook knows. could it be the clocks?i have never had a  buzzer from mine

checked the oil pick up pipe? It's in the sump with the pump, gets easily clogged up and can cause pressure loss.

new pump fitted and new oil and filter done last night. been told there is a oil pressure plat on the back of the clocks so i think this could be the problem as we now have new switches and new oil pump.

I have the same problem but at 2000rpm. Changed switches and clocks and it still does it despite oil pressure tested as A OK. I just ignore it now and have bought some VDO gauges to keep my mind at rest.

make sure wires are right way round, yellow to white sender, blue to black/brown/blue sender.  But if the light comes on above idle its beign caused by the high pressure circuit, which should also set the buzzer off.  Since its not, I'd say the oil pressure warning light circuit is kaput, its the 'L' shaped bit clipped to the back o the speedo.  Tbh, try another set o clocks from any MK2 with the same number of plugs, if light don't come on then you know its the clocks.

I say any MK2 as you can get carby ones for dirt cheap to try, but 16v ones usually come at a premium price!

Wires are spot on so it must be the pressure plate on the back of the clocks. a mate is lending me one tomorrow to try so if this solves it i will be happy. joys of mk2 ownership lol its a cracking car just been for a blast and it ticks over great and as i changed the oil  for some good stuff it revs quicker.

Just thought I'd update this thread with what solved my flickering oil light...

A proper good oil flush (Wynns)
A decent oil change
A genuine VW filter (I think this was the critical bit)

Okay,  Idiot Question time - what grade of oil should be in the car?   Going to do a flush, change and filter on mine soon (same problem exactly) and I have no idea what to get    its an 8v
