Bad 1st service experience
« on: 07 January 2008, 15:26 »
Booked the car in for first service (10,000 miles) last Friday - main VW dealer.
Specified the Long Life oil as recommended on here
- it was already printed on the job sheet when I took it in.
So far so good.
Checked the car before going in to pay Friday night and what do I find
- a 5 litre can of the standard oil (502 spec) with about half a litre left in it, sat in the passenger foot well.
Took this to the service reception and put it on the desk.
"What's this ?" I'm asked.
"Where's your boss ?" I reply.
"He just left, why ?".
"Read the job sheet."
"Ah !".
Anyway, mistake was acknowledged and they offered to put it right first thing following morning - OK.
Before leaving, decided to check the service indicator had been re-set - 9400 miles showed up ??
Went back in and quizzed them - no sensible answer, so decided to take the car away without paying anything.
Said I'd consider bringing back in the morning if I felt like it.
Which i did...
Said I wanted to watch the job being done, not that I was sceptical.
I was allowed to stand next to where it was being done.
Oil was drained, sump plug replaced then the mechanic started lowering the car back to the ground.
"What about the filter ?" I asked (and the helf litre or so of the lower spec oil in it).
"Not been told to change it".
"It IS going to be changed !" I informed him.
"I'll have to check with the manager".
It was changed.

They said 9400 miles was the usual display when reset in Time and Distance mode.
Can anyone confirm or refute that ?

At least they had the decency not to charge any labour.

But it really does make you wonder what goes on behind closed doors when they have your pride and joy in their hands...

Unbelievable !!

It's correct.  It's because the service interval is measured in km, and 15,000 km (t&d interval) is about 9400 miles.

Not the story that I was told - some bull about the countdown starting at 600 miles...???

I'd lost interest by then, but does it beg a question about warrenty if it goes over 10,000 miles before next service ??

And if the car is calibrated in miles and the handbook refers to 10,000 miles (which I assume it does) what has 15,000km got to do with anything ??

Even more confused now !

Name and shame buddy!!! Name and shame... i have done it a few times after being seriously peeved at the way Richard Alexander in Leeds treated me. So now if anyone asks me anything about my car I tell them how great Wakefield were, and how poor leeds are. Then email the post/link to their manager.

It happened in Doncaster.

To be fair, the individuals involved were reasonably apologetic about it all,
and they did compensate me for the inconvenience of having to take the car back for a second attempt
(at the simplest of all jobs),
but only after I had made it clear that I knew what I was talking about.
It was the filter bit of the incident that really infuriated me, just utter incompetance or penny pinching at the extreme - maybe a bit of both ?

We've had VW's for about 7 years now and always taken them to the Rotherham or Hillsbrough main dealers for servicing and repairs and never had too much to complain about, although I haven't been as fussed in the past because they were all lower spec lower priced cars. Thought I'd give the local dealer a chance this time - you live and learn, but without standing over them, how do you really know what they get up to ?

It has totally detroyed any confidence that was left in main dealer services.

R32 - maybe I'll try Wakefield next time, not too far from here.

I would say so... I just phone the same sales rep and he ensures that my car is more than well looked after! I think his name is Terry and he is always happy to help.

The service intervals are calculated in km, irrespective of what the speedo shows.

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/services/servicing/service_intervals

"*Please note that all mileages are approximate as the service indicator system uses kilometres as the distance measurement."

Nothing to be confused about
