Immobiliser and alarm
« on: 03 January 2008, 21:20 »
Can anyone recommend a decent immobiliser and alarm for my MK2. Don't want to spend too much but could do with some added security. I don't want an alarm that keeps going off all the time though. Also, how much would it be getting them fitted roughly?

Any idea how much insurance would go down having them?

Thanks

I'm not too sure, but i've had a look quickly for you but my Toad Ai606 was great, remote central locking, option to have full closure for the electric windows and didn't go off a lot. However the bill from the previous owner came up to £300 including fitting with certificate back in 2003.

You can try places like this that give you a quote:

Or get the people to come and fit it for you:
http://www.toadalarm.com/installation.php

But for a decent CAT1 i think you might have to pay much more than £200.

Fitting looks like it can be expensive. There's an alarm on caraudiosecurity.com that is Thatcham approved for £179.99 but fitting is from at least £299.

Is it better just to get the immobiliser and forget the alarm? Even then fitting is pricey, but at least it might stop people stealing my car. :undecided:

From your link there's not an installer in my area when clicking for a quote.

You could try http://www.gapsecurity.co.uk/

I had an immobiliser fitted by them and was very impressed with the service.

Tbh a good thatcham alarm and fitting is always going to cost you a fair whack

I know what you're saying but I'm in a c**p job that doesn't pay well until I find one in what I got a degree in so money's pretty tight. I have other plans for the car this year too.

Found a nice one. It's the Toad Ai 606 Car Alarm. It's Thatcham Cat 1 approved and is £350, which must include fitting. http://www.caralarmuk.com/acatalog/Insurance_Approved_Thatcham_Category_I_Alarms.html

Anyone had experience with this alarm?

Spec looks good:

Thatcham Category 1 Vehicle Security System
A high specification alarm system with a comprehensive range of security features including door, boot & bonnet protection, ultrasonic interior protection, 2 circuit passive immobilisation, a self powered siren, panic feature, converts your existing central locking to remote central locking, spare channels for optional headlight activation, total closure etc.

What do you think?

You can get an ai606 fitted for £200 quid. There's a guy that does them on ebay that a few people on e38 recommend, can't remember where he is based though.
