Best uprated VW brakes for mk2
« on: 20 December 2007, 19:58 »
Hello! whats the best thing for uprating ure brakes on a mk2??

my max wheel size is 15" so i believe that limits me to 280mm discs...

G60 set up is that my only option??

i dont wanna pay silly money for 4 pots as u can get floating calipers to work as well....

Thanks

Its a bit of an odd one, 280mm fit inside some 15's but not others

For example, sometimes they fit inside ra's sometimes they dont, same with aftermarket wheels, some they fit under, some they dont

I hust done the 280mm upgrade with the 22mm master cylinder, standard discs and pads. Really happy.... but I had grooved discs and a decent compound pad on my 239mm (think thats right) on my '90 8v, and they were great! So if you can afford it go 280mm, I would go for a set of grooved front discs, a good set of pads, go S.S brake lines all round. I also had by bias valve done a year or so ago which if you suspect it's toast you might as well while the brake fluid is being bleed. Also a half decent brake fluid should be budgeted for. Hope that hasn't given palpatations this close to christmas!

good luck

yeh just make sure the calipers are working might be an idea to give them a recon/buy new ones and get some fast road pads(green stuff) and grooved disks, should be plenty of braking power, but if your going for serious track slag you might want to consider race pads ( green stuff, or even yellow stuff )

I've got a 280mm set up minus discs and pads here for £60 if you want - means you can buy the pads and discs you want.

I run 280mm stoppers and the 22mm master on my G2 Syncro and they are ace - really stand the car on it's nose when needed.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

G60 setup is good. Use braided lines, Zimmerman Discs and Pagid Fast road, or your prefered pads.
Nice.

No palpatations here mate! i would buy brembo's if u could sneak them under the 15's

but im limited to 280mm so it limits my choice... and they dont work much better anyway!

Errr, no - caliper carriers, carrier mounting bolts, hubs and the calipers - everything bar the consumables.

It's not just a matter of swapping the calipers to go from 239-280.

I used Zimmerman discs on mine, which seem fine.  As a mate pointed out vs others they also have holes in the bell which will improve ventilation and reduce heat transfer into the hubs.

The weight and performance of my car means drilled and grooved rotors wouldn't yield any advantage anyway.
