Rattling Heat Shield
« on: 20 March 2004, 11:19 »
Think I might have a rattling heatshield - wondering how much I should be looking at to get it done?

Wanna have some idea of what quotes I get are rip offs and what ones sound about right?

Quotes please!!

Thank you

You will find the reason it is ratling is because there is a loose nut between the shield and the cat. Its very small and easily missed. Chances are thats whats making the noise. It goes behind the forward bolt which is nearly always missing!

Bend the shield down and get it out! Then bend the shield back up. You don't wanna remove it or you could damage the cat as it helps diserpate heat! You can't just replace the shield it is part of the cat and they are very expensive ?150+. Although i saw some cheap on ebay.

The shield is in place to stop the cat getting damaged, so don't remove it!

What about fixing a rattle from the heat shield over the exhaust manifold?

oright folks. new to the forum so be gentle.
i got a 97 mrk3 8v gti 62k and like much of the ^^^^^ i got a rattle from the front heat shield. i've been back to the garage at no cost to get it fixed and the dude has now welded it on 3 occasions. just been on a round trip of 400 miles and i can here the rattle coming back in at between 2 1/2 and 3 grand on the rev counter.

he said that to fix the problem if it still continues would be to buy a brand new section at 150+vat or to take it out and sort it as the current part is in good nik apart from the rattle. he was saying it's a c**t to get to so maybe taking it out to sort it would be better?

i am sure he said he used a jubilee clip in there last time i was in(last friday). is there another way to sort this  ::) as i don't want to pay out the 150 quid for a new part if he can't fix it once its out.....

cheers in advance

currently rattling:
1. To make or emit a quick succession of short percussive sounds.
2. Not anymore - Now rumbling

The local VW garage fixed mine for free when they were putting my new stereo in for me (also for free, Barnetts of St Andrews - kudos to you guys) and it seems to be fine now, if one i could get rid of the horrible rattle from the back box below 2500rpm. I think somethin has come undone inside it, now it sounds horrible from cold in traffic :/
