16v not bad, 8v too slow. £1,200 for a 16v would be about right if it is half decent condition.

thanks hurdy but can i just quote the following

Quote

The power-to-weight ratio had slipped from 133 bhp per ton to 113. That translated into a top speed of 124 mph and a sluggish 0-60 mph time of 8.7 seconds - surprising, as the new GTI had a larger 2.0 litre engine with Digifant multi-point electronic fuel injection system and regulated catalytic converter. With an enlarged bore and stroke at 82.5 mm and 92.8 mm respectively, the output rose to 115 bhp at 5400 rpm

I think the 0-60 speed is for a 16v!! it's common knowledge the 8v needs around 9.7 seconds!! and thats about all mine can do  :embarassed:

If you are looking for something nippy and fun then don't bother with the Mk3 - get a decent Mk2 16v instead.  If you will be doing longer distances and/or want refinement and comfort at a low budget instead then buy the Mk3.

Sorry Joe, but the Mk3 16v is a pile of pooh compared to the Mk2 16v - in terms of speed and handling and looks.

I have owned 3 - 4 Mk3 GTI's (all 8v's admittedly) and 2 VR6's but they don't compare to the Mk2 16v in any way.  Also, the Mk2 8v is much much better than the Mk3 8v GTI which for a GTI is shockingly   Mind you, I am looking purely from a GTI perspective.  Still, they aren't as bad as the Mk4 GTI (Non-Turbo)

If the Mk3 8v GTI didn't have the GTI badge, it would be a great car. Comfortable, makes good progress and an excellent motorway cruiser.  Ditto for the 16v.

The Mk5 has the best of both - sporty and fun like the Mk1 and Mk2's, yet refined and comfortable like the Mk3 and Mk4's.  Superb
