Anyone made a parcel shelf out of MDF?
« on: 15 November 2007, 16:52 »
Hey all,

I dont want to cut my original parcel shelf so am going to head down to BnQ at some point and buy a sheet of MDF (its like £6 or something) I have the boot carpet ready to cover it but not sure on how its best to cut 6x9 holes into it.

Any suggestions on how to cut it acurately?

Would buying 6x9 boxes to put on top of my parcel shelf be a better option? (theyre £19.99 and are the same as these - http://i22.ebayimg.com/07/i/000/99/81/b907_1.JPG)

Thanks

I done it on my Mk3 - easy peasy!

But then I do have all the tools required like jigsaw, drill, planner.

I'd buy another parcel shelf and cut it up, the diy mdf one will squeak and rattle like nothing else. Actually what I'd do is put them in the rear door cards, loadsa room, looks better and better acoustics.

woo my mate with an estate (lolz) has agree'd to take me to BnQ at 6 so ill be able to get it and try it tomorrow. Have located a jigsaw and already have a drill.

Im asuming it would be easiest to pencil onto the wood an outline of where im cutting?

Why do you want to make a lot of work for yourself, when there are perfectly good speaker locations in the front? (which will sound better)

I only have the dash speakers and dont have door grills nor know how to wire cables to the doors. Just seems a better option to put 6x9s in the parcel shelf to me. Also a bonus that my mate gave me some for free

Fair enough...

The door grilles are cheap from VW, and it's pretty easy to feed the wires through.  Just a thought.

See if you can source a rotary cutter/spiral saw.
Quicker than a jig-saw and you won't need the drill.
Great for following the curves too.
I picked one up last year for about £20 to do the same job on my nova.
Then after word got around that I had one, the requests for making parcel shelfs flooded in.
