If its a 16v, theres three temp senders on the right hand side of the head (near the dizzy).  They are all inter-changeable, so you can just unplug the red/yellow wire (thats the one for the dash gauge IIRC) and pop it on one of the other senders to check if you get a better signal.

thanks a bunch, i'll have a fiddle and see if i get a reading! if not then i'll trace the wires back to the dash i suppose? or cud it be the sensor itself playing up?

Yep, its the black one. Dont think the sender is expensive from Euro's or GSF?

only get the ones from VW, around about the same price (i think) and alot more reliable!

probbaly is the sendor thats faulty... although check the connections and replace the connector if in doubt, do the cheap things first

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!

bridge the pins on the plug, if the gauge shoots to max and the light starts flashing its the sender.

Also the earlier MK2s had the single pin sensor just like the 16v, its threaded into the flange on the front of the head.  Look for a red/yellow wire, thats the gauge feed.  If you do have the single pin jobber, earth it somewhere metal and check the gauge as above.
