New ED30 - Great, except turbo not working
« on: 08 November 2007, 08:49 »
Picked up my new black ED30 last week, and been running it in since then.  After 1000k finally tried to open her up a bit, and have to say was totally underwhelmed. I am pretty sure the turbo is not working !

4th, 5th & 6th feel slow, and no turbo surge, no turbo sound, nothing.  Having had 2 petrol turbo cars before, I know what I was expecting.

So much for their pre-delivery inspection.

It's booked in on Monday at local stealers - fingers crossed.

Apart from that, the ED30 is great.
Ordered 9 Sep 13 - GTD 5 dr Manual, Tornado Red. Luckily Offered and accepted a cancellation, delivery est 2.12.13.

There is vitualy no lag on the ED30 and the power is very progressive.  I've had turbo cars and this one is very different.

Having said that it's pretty obvious if the turbo isn't working as the car will be brick slow with no pick up above 2000 rpm.  I'm surprised you didnt notice this when running in.

Sounds like you're losing boost pressure somewhere in the system. I'd get it looked at before you do any damage.

On a similar issue, recently I have noticed that my standard GTI appears to have lost some power when accelerating, and could not hear the turbo whistle sound in the cabin.

I took it is for my first service and mentioned this, and they told me that they had upgraded the engine management software which seemed to slightly improve this - however I still cannot hear the turbo whistle which was very evident when I first had the car?  Should I still be able to hear this sound clearly on higher revs - the car is just over a year old and has done 14K miles?

Still sounds like a blown DV

If this is a blown DV, will this mean that you would not hear the turbo whistle in the cabin?

A blown dv reduces power and leaks air from the system, which in turn would reduce power and the ability of the turbo to spool up as fast and so would then reduce the whistle sound too :nerd:

!!!! thats not good...

I'm at 350 miles still running in and its 'very' obvious this is a turbo car even on partial throttle
No noticeable whistle (unless you have the windows down)
But the 'push' is cert very obvious esp on the ED30 comp to the GTI

unless you came from a FQ300

so somethings wrong Im afraid , and a major air leak seems an obvious choice either by a loose pipe or a dodgy valve that never closes.
