Hmm, interesting. I've been following this thread and been thinking the exact same about my standard GTi but was a little hesitant to contact the dealer as I thought I'd be done for time wasting, especially as I've only covered 1,000 miles or so.
To me, (like your description) the car feels more or less like a N/A 2.0 - there seems to be reasonable grunt up to about 3,500/4,000rpm, at which point, I'd expect it to fly but it doesn't - in fact at times it almost feels a bit asthmatic. I had a Golf Gt 170 (1.4 TSi) before this and it felt more raw at higher RPM for some reason, don't get me wrong the GTi is fast (as the speedo testifies!) but perhaps not so much as I'd have expected - there's also no discernible turbo sounds bar a VERY quiet tish from the turbo when lifting off (I'd have expected it to be slightly more pronounced/more of a spool up sound).
Perhaps I'll get the dealer to have a quick look to be sure.
