Do I just need a oil filter for a oil change?
« on: 30 October 2007, 12:55 »
Easy one I know but never changed the oil before. Is the only part I need a new oil filter or do you need a new O ring seal as well? (gsf partno:  11720?)

As for the filter, cant see any on gsf but would euro card parts 501440100 or 501440105 do the job?

(its for a mk3 2.0 8v gti colour concept btw)

While I am on the subject any recommend any new spark plugs as well?

Cheers

Only ever changed the filter myself.

Spark plugs go with standard so you can get them from gsf or Euro along with filter.

the filter should come with the o rings you need for it, if they don't they are only going to be pence and worth renewing.

if you're changing the oil via the sump plug you'll want a new seal for that too.

Is changing the oil via the sump plug not the normal way of doing it? Any idear of what part no the seal for that might be as I can't see it on gsf or euro anywhere.

can't really help with the part number at the mo.

through the plug is the normal DIY way, however garages have a big vacuum cleaner type device that sucks the oil out through the dip stick hole, this means you can change the oil hot (which allows for flush etc to be run through)

Does a "OIL SEAL-RUBBER RING" sound the right thing?

If you buy a new genuine oil filter it will already have the seal built into it. You'll need a new oil filter, a new sump plug and copper washer, an oil filter removel tool (£3 odd from halfrauds), standard plugs will do you for your car, they'll tell you the right ones if you give them the year model and engine code. For oil i'd use 10w semi synthetic for the winter. Whilst you're at it you might aswell get a new pollen filter (essential for the winter to demist the front screen as far as i'm concerned) and a new air filter. If you want to give it a more hardcore service then consider a new distributer cap, rotor arm and ignition leads. Not a fat lot for them and they're a hell of a lot easier to do than changing oil.
