cant get into first! Is there a cheap fix!

Howdy

After a long day at work, working my ass off, i reach for my coat grab my pack lunch box and walk towards my car.  Relax in the seat of my lovely digi start the motor, spin some music and then........

the b*st*rd :-X gearbox will not go into first!!!!

I did notice that when I swithced the car off it would go into first and I only knew this as two weeks before the same thing happened and the RAC man diagnpsed this as the clutch cable.  Been fine since then.

Am I correct in thinking a new clutch.  However, the cars only done 70k and had a new clutch three years ago???

OR

Is there some kind of gearbox lever that can break, been told by the mechanic that a mk2s are susceptible for a rod breaking on one of the gearbox levers?

Let me know your thoughts, many thanks in advance to feedback...

one of the plastic rods may have snapped open bonnet and check them all!

does it go in 1st with the engine off!
if it does it may be a gearbox problem....

or clutch problem........clutch release bearing......?
need proper mecanic to take alook........

until you know what it is it could be a number of things

I'd check the linkage alignment.........quite a common problem and a cheap fix.

Its was preciseely what Richad Hazel has said.  The clutch cable replaced and the cable was catching on something near the clutch pedal..sorted ....and surprisingly my mechanic didn't even charge me cause it was so simple to fix, although I am a bit dubious as to the fact that he replaced the the clutch cable in the first place.

thanks for the feedback all
