4 motion
« on: 17 October 2007, 08:27 »
Wa just having a quick read through the VW manual and came across the Tips & Maintenance section. Under the 4 motion section is states that "the engine power is distributed permanently to all four wheels in vehicles with four wheel drive"

This has me slightly confused as to how the 4 wheels drive system actually works!! Many a time I have read that the power is supplied to the rear wheels only when the front ones loose traction...

Someone care to clear this up?? :embarassed:

your right with your 2nd statement. Haldex system is NOT full time 4 wheel drive, only when traction is lost at the front, power is then transfered to the rear to stabilize it.

Hmm still a little confused. I have read that about the Haldex system and took in how it works. But then why would VW put this in the user manual?? Its section 3.2 Tip & Maintenance (Golf, Golf Plus, Golf GTi). Now i know it doesnt mention R32 but which of the other golfs have 4 wheels drive??

Are they talking about the 4motion golf?? Does the r32 not have 4motion?? Is that why the little 4motion sign on the gear nob is now gone??? why?? why?? whyyyyyyy???

You could get the 2.0 TDI along with 4-motion until relatively recently, and perhaps Golf Plus in Europe also...4 motion seems to be more widely available for models there

My understanding of the Haldex system was that all the wheels could be permanently driven, but that the system defaults to front wheel drive under most conditions, and that it could direct up to 100% power to either the front and back differentials in milliseconds, when conditions demanded. That way, you could have a variable split of power(50/50, 60/40, 30/70, etc, or even a 100% rear wheel drive Golf) according to the conditions and how the Haldex ECU analysed them

That was my understanding too. however i was under the assumtion that the R32 is front wheel drive until traction is lost. But in the book it clearly stated power is distributed to ll four wheels. Confused the shizzel out of me. might have to get it on the gravel and try to get someone to observe which wheels go first.

Phope's got it spot on thats exactly how it works, maybe somethings got lost in translation.
The Haldex ECU can be chipped to make the change over more aggressive which could be a lot of fun

I want to get the haldex remap done for the exact reasons as mentioned above. Im in N Ireland and dont know of anywhere here that will do it? Also, what do you all think would be the best setup to go for? I was thinking 40/60 (60 to the rear of course).

Am I correct in assuming that once the Haldex remap is done even when traction is lost the spread will hold at the given 40/60 etc rather than shuffling the power around like it does standard?

The Haldex only controls the rear axle so I dont see how it could ever do more than a 50/50 split. ie it cannot go 100% rwd.
