H reg MK2 1.6 Driver for £300 - What to expect
« on: 16 October 2007, 20:16 »
Ok my dads spotted a H reg Navy blue mk2 driver 1.6 on his works notice board. He said its got 120 something thousand miles.

Its on there for £300 with 12 months MOT and 5 months Tax.

It only has the Steel rims on but they can be changed. Also has the 4 lights on the front (thing Drivers have 2 as standard?)

As it passed the MOT im thinking it cant be too bad :\ Going to get my dad to have a look at it anyway and might buy it.

What stuff should i look out for at this low price (problems etc.)? Might just be that someone thinks the age brings the price down to that buy who knows :\

Thanks

its like any second hand car if its been loved then it will be fine, lets be honest 300.00 with the fact that its been mot'd and has 80.00 of rent in the window would be enough to convince me its a winner.

it depends what your dream is, if you want a good solid reliable car for transport then it is probably just that.

if you really want a gti, unless it insurance or age preventing you then save up and get one.

a 1600 driver with the same components just less power being pushed through it for its life is bound to be in good order

check it, starts, drives no funny noises etc, after that value is just added for desirability, service history and the big one condition.

i just paid 2.5k for a 16v its got all the bits and is standard, im happy cause i think its woth it, if its what you want, in yr budget then i am sure it will be a good starting point, its a good place to learn, parts are cheap and plentiful and its a mk2 what more can you want.

as said, for a car with 12 months ticket and some rent on it £300 is good.

See how much life is left in the tyres, they may have JUST passed the MOT.

£300 still sounds like a steal as the mot is £50 and 5months tx is about £50!

ITS A TRAP!

yea i need something that will work for a while so if the magority of it looks sound (bodywork not too shabby/repairable and the engines not too bad then i might get it just to use for 6 months (might have left college by then and gots a real job )

Tyres arent a mega problem as i know some people in the business :)

Been looking on ebay at GTi's aswell that i could take parts off (big bumpers and such) aswell

Go for it, i had one a few years ago, nice red Driver, had 148k on the clock, and it went for 2 years no probs.

Oh and the four light grill is standard for the driver.

I loved that car, shame the heater matrix blew up and flooded the car  and then went mouldy haha

Is there a way to take out the inner lights? I dont like them much :\ waiting for my dad to get home to find out if he's seen it or anything

keep the twin lights mate. Personally I reckon that's what makes them look so sexy from the front.

Personal preference though obviously so do your thing :)

As everyone else here has said, £300 with tax and ticket - already on to a winner.  I've just spent £1800 on my 8v gti, it's in good nick, but I'm still in the mood for spending as much as I can on it (and the bank have just approved a new credit card with a 3.5k limit on it - oh dear!!)..... I imagine you'll be the same, they're a very lovable car.

Happy driving.
