Anyone had overheating problems with the GTI whilst stood in traffic for more than 15 minutes or so ?

Happened a couple of times now, first in Edinburgh at easter - RAC guy said coolant resevoir cap hadn't been closed fully - not impressed. Then again the other day - temperature started creeping up 100. This time I put the fan and heater on full blast before the warning light came on and the temperature came down very quickly. Tested it on the drive and neither fan were cutting in for more than a few seconds before switching off again - temperature gradually crept up again.

Driving normally, temperture indicates a rock solid 90 degrees all the time.

Now booked into dealer next week for inspection.

Anyone else had this problem ?

nope, always sat at 90, probably just somthing to do with the fan  :sad:

Someone a while ago on here had problems with the their fans, can't remember who now.

I'm sure VW will sort you right out.

was the fan running with the air-con turned off, as it sounds like the overheat fans running 24-7 but turns out it was the air-con pump that made me think there was a fault but wasnt

You're right Phil, I thought the intermittent nosie might have been the radiator cooling fans cutting in but that was the air con system. The radiator cooling fans are so quiet that you probably can't hear them at all when you're in the car (especially when they ain't working !!)

Dealer had the car yesterday and said one of the fans needed replacing although the "memory" had not recorded any faults during operation. Said they'd run it up and tested and all OK. Haven't had chance to verify. Explicitly told them not to wash the car and guess what...

Had both fans replaced on my 55 plate GTi, but for the opposite, they were running all the time, but there is known fault with them
