Idle on a 8v gti...
« on: 04 October 2007, 11:45 »
howdie..

2ltr 8v gti, fast cams and machined b/e..

before any one says use the search function i have... so there!

right, start the car and it fires up everytime, idle is fine, until my oil temp hits 100degrees, then i get erratic idle, car is lumpy and horrible when sat, and the oil like flicks on everynow and again, but as i say, until its warm, not a problem... except sometimes the revs stick at around 1100rpm at idle.

car admittedly needs a tune up, and tappets need doing, but other than that, cant see any air leaks but not sure where to look, and its had a new blue temp sender, oil pressure sensors...

any ideas anyone? should i start with cleaning the ISV with carb cleaner? or could it be the MAF?

i understand the fast cams will cause a certain amount of lumpy idle, but its defiently getting worse...

cheers

rob

If it's a Digifant, have you tried to replace the blue temp sender?

what's the water temp like cus 100degrees(for oil) is a bit hot mine neva goes over 94.??

how old is oil/filter.?
have you checked oil pressure switch.?
do you have a oil cooler.? is it blocked.?
or it could be an faulty idle valve.?

haha, peaks at about 114 degrees for oil, but water never gets above just below 1/2... cooler might be shot...

oil filter is nearly new, had a change about 2 months ago. had new pressure switches (admittedly from euro car parts, but only cos the stealers guy is a spaz. and im gonna clean the isv out this weekend.

where is the idle valve located? and are they simple/cheap to change/fix?

I wouldn't say 100 degrees for the oil is hot tbh. The highest mine got last night was 106 degrees and that was doing a ton for 20 minutes!

(this not me just for you to see what you're looking for)

mk2/3 golf's use the same part. on a mk2 1.8, it's located on the rocker cover prob the same on a 2.0 with digi injection.
if it's working, with the bonnet open put hand though window N turn ignition on(all lights) and you should hear it click on, if not check wiring as connector may be corroded or a broken wire or faulty unit..?????
or you could just unplug connector whilst running idle. (LOL)

right then, jus had a go at cleaning the isv, checked it was working before, by switchin ignition on, and touched it and could feel it vibrating slightly... so, off it came and had a good spray with carb cleaner...

put it all back together and it was still buzzing with ignition on... so fired er up and still not so ggreat idle... i unplugged the isv while the car was idleing and nothing happend at all, carried on with crappy idle... should it have made a difference?

bit confused now...
