MPG (Litres per Km) - who really cares?
« on: 08 September 2007, 00:06 »
I just wanted to throw a spanner in the works and ask what is with al the discussion of MPG? Its a GTi, did we really buy these cars to see how much fuel we can save?

I want to know who can get the WORST out of a tank of fuel, now that would be a talking point!!!

I care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

35mpg from 227bhp in a useable everyday package.

The fuel consumption is the cherry on the cake.

Would you have bought a GTI if it only managed 10 mpg and every other hot hatch managed 30?

I am with you. I care, too. I do drive it, I do not totally cane it, and I do not go on track, but I use it full out on Autobahns, and I give it to her in the twisties. And I do not pinch pennies and give her the expensive Shell V-Power 100.
It is not like I am squeezing mpgs from it, but I do look at consumption, I monitor it.

It a car like that, which is basically everyday hatch with a bigger engine, it is strange not to at least monitor consumption.

I bet even drivers of Lambos monitor their fuel levels, as Gallardo can go around 120km on a fuel tank in the city. You do not want to look like a moron sitting on the side of the road without gas in your shiny Lambo, now do you?

ok whats your town average mpg? there is absolute no way the car will average that even it it leaved on
a motorway doing 60mph at its life. That means your getting 370 to a tankfull which is impossible, and yours is more thirsty ed30

Fair enough.

But.

I am running in my ED30 so no more than 3500rpm(ish) but still getting along very (very) well, no motorways over here all 'B' roads so no steady state running, just completed an 800 mile round trip and got 32.4 mpg outward (95 octane because of free dealer tank fill, engine very tight).

Return leg 35.47mpg, 98 octane, 60-95mph 'B' road fun (95mph = 3600rpm). 382 miles showing on trip computer for return leg with 30 miles showing until fuel tank empty, car took 49 litres to fill out of a tank capacity of 55 litres and MPG was measured from 'fuel to fill', not from computer, therefore 35.47mpg.

I could have stretched 400 miles out of the return leg tank of fuel.

I don't know my round town average as I haven't owned it long enough yet but as we don't have traffic jams down here I would expect around 30 MPG. I'll let you know.

At a constant throttle 100kph (just over 60mph) on a flat straight road my trip computer shows 38-45mpg so your assumption that "it wouldn't do 35mpg if you left it on a motorway at 60mph" is, thankfully, not true.

It's not that I don't care about my fuel consumption. It's that I don't bother looking at it - at all!!

I know it has a comparable MPG compared to other cars and that is enough for me. I drive the car how I want and just fill it up when I need to. I can't understand people who covet their MPG. It is as someone one here said - "smiles per mile" are more important

Hurdy, I quite understand, but on these forums we measure everything be it Mpg, Mph, Bhp, torque, exhaust pipe width etc etc.

If we weren't pedantic about every single aspect of our motoring life we'd run out things to say and miles per gallon is just another one of those variables we all love to monitor and quote.

If we were actually truly interested in epic mpg figures we'd all be driving 1 litre diesels and posting on 'tdi.co.uk'.
