18" Monza IIs replaced under warranty
« on: 02 September 2007, 17:41 »
As title suggests, got all 4 wheels replaced under warranty, as they were corroding.  The back wheels were worse than the front which, TBH, you could only notice if you looked very closely.   :nerd:

Still, got all 4 replaced under warranty (and got a pile of other stuff that was annoying me fixed), no questions asked, no arguments.

It took them bl00dy ages to get it done though - they kept phoning me and saying "Yes Mr Cat your alloys have arrived, but I'm afraid they have arrived damaged...".     THREE times they arrived damaged, and the dealer refused to accept them.

Whilst I was a bit miffed at how long it took to get the alloys replaced, I am pleased that the dealer didn't just say "ah F#ck it, we'll fit them anyway", and stick the damaged ones on.

I suppose the fact that I had asked them to fix so many little things made them think I wouldn't accept alloys that were damaged.  Either that or they are just a decent bunch.

So, all's good.  Except when I went to pick up the car I noticed they had lost one of the plastic covers for the wheel bolts, and left me a fecking huge oily footprint on the driver's side floor mat.

Still, overall pleased with the outcome.

yeah - I had three of mine replaced with no quibbles... the fourth (passenger front) was unfortunately kerbed so that diodn't get done.  Also had new engine fitted, some missing screws replaced and a loose plastic panel sorted... v.happy with car now... just having to run it in which is a bit of a pain    took em 2 weeks to do it all.. had to put up with a 1.2E polo...man, my car felt superb after that!!  Made me appreciate it again!
Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".

The 18" Monzas must have cost VW a small fortune with replacements. I don't think we will see such beautiful alloys on VAG cars for a while .

i'm amazed VW keep making the same mistake when it comes to wheel finishes.  I think it started with the Santa Monica's on the MKIV, then the Anni alloys had the same problem and now the Monza's.

Why is it the best looking wheels suffer from the same problem?? :undecided:

Was the finish on the Santa Monica's similar to the painted finish on the Monza IIs and the 18" on the Eos and GT Sport? More warrenty claims coming VWs way then.

The finish on my Avus IIs (MKIV) was just as good when I sold the car as they where when  new.

I had two replaced as well and the dealer also had to send three back as they were damaged on arrival.

I wasn't surprised as they are transported in cardboard boxes with no internal packing

I have been battling for over 4 months to get all the wheels changed, repeatedly being told fair wear and tear, how internal corrosion is fair wear and tear and not a manufacturing issue is the one question they cannot answer.  Now the pics are with VAG for them to decide what to do.
On 2 wheels it's not even white worms but, white circles in the grey paint in the spoke indents, clearly under the lacquer.

What age and mileage are people getting their wheels changed at?

Mine was under 2 years and 18K miles when this saga started

on the Santa's and the 25th Anni wheels there was a chrome finish which kept peeling and corroding.  Not seen the 18's on the EOS or GT so can't be certain they look similar  :undecided:

Shrodinger - did you have any kerbing on yours?

All four of mine are corroding after 12months/10k miles, but the stealer refuses to replace any of them, citing the kerbing.  I carefully pointed out to them that the corrosion was no where near any of the kerbing marks, but they are adamant they wont be replaced.

Has anyone else had corroded Monza IIs replaced with kerbing marks??
