What's the HIC windscreen cover when third party?
« on: 29 August 2007, 10:15 »
I'm insured with HIC at the mo (not fully comp... was waiting for a few year's no claims first), but I've noticed I've got a chip in my windscreen, with some small cracks coming out of it..  I had a go at repairing it myself, and although it seems to have filled in the actual chip, it doesn't seem to have done anything with the cracks, so I guess it's not going to be a good enough repair for the MOT in Oct.

I'll dig out my policy documents later on, but anyone (martinb?) know what HIC's windscreen cover usually is with TPFT?  Specifically:
- Am I likely to have any form of windscreen cover?
- What the excess would be (my Excess is high... 350 or 500 or something, but windscreen excess is usually lower, no?)
- would it affect my no claims?

P.S. When I took out my policy my Username on here was ChipDeath (last Display name was V_ARSE6)...  but I lost the password, *and* lost the details for whatever email account I originally used, so I was a bit buggered there, but I just started a new account since there were only a few hundred posts, and I couldn't be arsed to chase it up .  My Policy documents still state my old username as my forum ID tho - is it vital that I get this changed?

Unfortantly you do not get any windscreen cover on our TPFT policies (same with most companies)

Windscreen claims would not effect your no claims and are usually subject to a lower excess (usually between £50-£70)

The user name is not really a problem.

Hope that helps

Martin

It helps, not the answers I was hoping for of course, but the answers I was expecting...

I'll have to pop into VW and see how much a new windscreen would cost me.  I doubt anyone could repair it now since I had a go myself.

Didn't think the username thing would matter much

Thanks for the reply all the same!

A bit of advice - shop around! My car needed a new screen when I bought it - Autoglass wanted about £500, RAC did it for about £130 I think from memory - I crapped myself when I saw the first price, and nearly paid it because I assumed that prices for something like this wouldn't differ very much - glad I decided to check it out though!

And another thing I just remembered - Autoglass wanted an extra £30 to come and fit it, as apposed to me taking it to them, RAC - no extra charge :)

That was everything all in, including fitting - although I think it was excluding VAT - that is from memory though, it might have been a bit more. I remember it was about 1/4 of the other price, which I rememebred was about £500 - this was a while back now!

Saw somone on fleabay flogging (new, allegedly) Mk3 Windscreens for £60.  how much are the seals?

Might have a go at it myself, if it's not too tricky.  I'm a reasonably competent mechanic (do my own oil changes, happily dismantled, cleaned and re-assembled the rocker assembly on my old escort 1.3 for example).

Money is very tight at the moment.. baby on the way so don't want to shell out too much cash if I don't have to

Theres a VW stealership 5 mins up the road so I'll swing by there after work and ask how much to fit one.

Bloody cars...

I refuse to sell it and get something cheaper after I went to the trouble of building an as-small-as-poss sub box so I could fit a pushchair in the boot
