Here's one for you all, bit of guidance most welcome please,

Question is, do I keep my std GTI (DSG with all the kit, laser blue too! ), remap and mod it to roughly 260bhp which would  make it a well balanced and punchy daily and useable car? :undecided:

Or go for a 2008 ED30 steel grey DSG with all the kit (although parallel import,  :undecided:)

Or go for the Passat R36 (being a fmaily man with 3 kids )

Or wait for the MKVI GTI and see what they've got (last one would be to consider a Merc C32 amg! as one mate suggested!)

I can just stretch to the ed30 or R36 and probably swap my GTI for the AMG and as for the MKVI, how long is the wait going to be?

My current GTI has been pretty good and I know of its good and bad points and am able to live with it, plus the major part of the depreciation has gone, whereas the new cars will have their fair slice of problems and other niggles! :undecided:

Now if only they did the RS4 or s3 with DSG

Bottom line is, what would you lot do?

I would personally spend £500 on a Revo re-map and wait a year. More info on the Mk VI will be available then and you can make a decision . The Scirocco Coupe is due out in the next year which should be an extremely interesting VAG motor.

Good point, my only niggle with the MKVI GTI is that rumour has it VW are on a major cost cutting and will be simplifying the rear suspension setup, if this is the case, will they be taking a step back with the MKVI GTI in terms of handling therefore making the ED30 a better choice?

As for the Scirocco, 3 kids, think I'd have to sell one of them to fit all in , love cars, but not that much!

The remap is the interesting option and looking like the possible winner as I have heard the new R36 passat is about 1700kg and not that much quicker than a std GTI anyway, (mine is capable of 0-60 in 6 secs, DSG with LC!).

Any more views?

Phil McCavities muses on whether to keep his GTI (Laser blue too!) or swap into an ED30 are becoming legendary. He loves the colour (I do too!) and you can get a decent remap and 240+bhp for a snip under £500 as The Reflex says. My personal opinion would be to remap and then hold off and see what the MKVI brings. If the MKVI is looking dodgy, pick up an ED30 with low miles and the initial depreciation gone. With the MKVI in production a MKV ED30 would depreciate further unless the MKVI is a pile of poo, in which case my ED30 would be worth a lot more

What kind of money are you prepared to splash (if you don't mind me asking of course!!)?

To be honest, I reckon I could have about £10k to play with bearing in mind my std golf gti is worth betweem £15-£16k, so many choices of cars for between £25 & £30k, could even pick up a decent M3!

The bottom line is and after racing cars like 535 diesels, 330's, volvo R's, mercs etc etc, my car just doesn't seem to lag too far behind these sort of cars, dread to think of what it could do with about 260bhp!

I like the ed30, not keen on the wheels, however (and like so many mags have said), the std car is such a good car is it really worth spending £10k on an ED30 :undecided: with the MKVI just around the corner? I think the MKVI GTI will be like two steps back personally, cheaper rear suspension setup and cost cutting all over!

The golf is the first sporty type car I have had that I want to keep driving, can thrash it to an inch of its life and yet still it returns over 31mpg

Remap seems the choice, but the R36 passat?

Hmm.....R36 Passat.

What kind of price is that going to be with all the bells and whistles. 4WD - 300PS - DSG - 1700kg and probably £35k!

I'm not sure if I like the looks of it though :undecided:

Is it an RS4 with 2 cylinders missing :undecided:

Spot the pattern.

VW Audi group V10=500+bhp Lambo
VW Audi group V8 = 400+bhp RS4
VW Audi group V6 = 300bhp R36
VW Audi group 4cyl = 200+bhp GTI, S3

Let's hope that the picture involving the R36 at the Nurburgring means that it will handle too.

300hp, FWD, 1700kg? what's the point? Better have Ed30 remapped. Or go S4/RS4.
