Auto headlights
« on: 21 August 2007, 20:35 »
Car has been 3 times now, first time for a reset of the autoheadlight settings, second time for a new sensor and 3rd time for a reset on the settings... to no avail the lights still don't work correctly.

If it is dark or dull at start up the lights come and will not switch off as it gets lighter, even if it is bright sun light. Also when they come on normally they have a reluctance to go back off??

Anyone else had this or know what it could be, garage are puzzled and are going to keep it 2 days to have a play and see if they can sort it...4th time lucky.

To be honest I'm not sure. Try VW Vortex if the people here cant help. As far as I know the headlights are meant to come on at 70mph.

Why are you complaining though? It does not damage the car if the lights stay on. If anyhting is it not safer cos people can notice you more?  :undecided:

The Sun senor on the dash takes the light reading.

My lights stay longer than I would expect sometimes as the light becomes brighter, but when I stop looking to see if they're on, then they usually go off! I don't think the light sensor gets it right all the time, for example it tends to switch the lights on towards dusk when I would have not done that manually, but it errs on the side of caution.

The speed-related thing is that they come on at 90mph. The wiper-related thing is that they come on after 5 continuous wipes.

So, from your description I'm not sure it's any different from mine which is maybe why they can't improve it as they're supposed to be like that?

Its the same as the wipers.

You can dump a bucket of water on the cars windscreen and they wont go on but just spray some water using the fine spray setting on your hose and they come on with a vengeance. Its electronic so you cant ever expect it to be perfect.

No they come on in bright sun light and dont go off.

The sensor is in the screen not the dash, I have been through it 3 times with the delear and he confess's there is a problem. 2nd time they replaced the sensor, on the other 2 occassions with have reprogrammed.

So...car stood stationary in sun glasses weather, start the car with hand over sensor(most of the time without hand on sensor, as you would normally start car), then remove hand, leave for 15-20 minutes and they are still on??? so this how auto lights work, clever them.

I have a Freelander 2 and they work perfectly, start car in sunlight dont come, if it starts getting dark they come on, start the car in dark they are on as it gets brighter they go off...Tell me if I am expecting to much.

If they have replaced the light sensor, then the only other options are to replace the actual light switch, and finally the relevent ECU.

I have the same issue with my autolights, they are completely useless! never use them now because they are so inconsistent! so annoying when they come on in bright sunlight! I used to see cars with lights on during the day and think 'why has that knob got his lights on!?' now I'm that knob!  :embarassed:
