Tinted glass + strange sounds!
« on: 19 August 2007, 15:38 »
I bought my GTi used but it's got the dark tinted glass option which is meant to be from the B-pillar back. The front windows however seem to be just as dark. Check out the pic

I think it looks quite nice like that but I just wondered.

I've had the car a few weeks now and I'm loving it so far. The only problem I can find so far is that when I turn sharp left or right, up or down an incline I get a strange sound from the doors. The best way I can describe it is if you were to put some rubber coated ball bearings on a metal tray and tilted the tray so that they moved from one end to the other - it sounds like that ! lol. Any ideas?

I'm not going to mod the car, well ok I wouldn't mind getting it chipped, oh and I'd like a double din Alpine head unit with big screen  :smug:

Has the window been replaced at some time? Broken glass in the bottom of the door maybe?

Hi mate,

Your car windows are the same as mine, standard front glass is slightly tinted anyway, approx 15/25%,rear as per order list is approx 60/70% and on the limit of the new law,ie full tint not allowed, esp in the front,so the plod can see you and your get away mask!!!!!

I am led to believe manufacturers can tint, but its very hard if not illegal to get a back street tinter to do it,hope this answers your question and anyone shoot me down if i am wrong!!!!!!

Chris.

its a bit hard to tell from the pics, are you saying the front windows are as dark as the back?  VW's factory rear tint would be illegal on the front windows, so I'm sure you will have an aftermarket tint fitted.  Does the rear glass look like a 'built in' tint?   from memory the VW factory tint is very dark, so perhaps your tints aren't factory?

I'm not sure now. When I see pics of cars with the dark rear tint, there's quite a big difference between the front and rears. On mine the difference is very small, the fronts are almost as dark, and definately darker than the windscreen. They look like factory tints, can't see any film on the inner surface. I'm not complaining as they look pretty cool

Not sure about this sound from within the door either, it sounds more rubbery rather than glass. I'll have to ask them to take a look at it when I take it in for a service.

have just looked at your pic..thats not factory glass, thats aftermarket tinting and is definately illegal.

if you have a crash in that car and the insurer inspects it for any reason, that will invalidate you insurance as your car in techincally not road worthy.

if you like tinted windows, you need to get the fronts taken off and done again in a much lighter tint...( not jus the front either, as i think different tint colours look nearyl as bad as half done and half not.

as the interior is dark, they will still look cool..

mine are done in legal tint and look in my eyes better than standard as they are just that bit darker than factory.

So VW have sold me an illegal car!

Going back to the sound from the door, I've listened out for it and it appears to be the rubber seals. It sounds like they are moving agaisnt each other. It's amazing how much sound they make when provoked lol.

my fronts are technically illegal, but Pentagon (who did it) assured me you would have to be very unlucky to get done for it, as mine is light smoke all round,

I was at a main dealer and saw a golf with smoke tints (darker than light smoke) for sale, it was clearly very illegal.
there is a whole loads of info on the net about tints, so see for yourself!

As JT said, those tints are definitely not standard.

Mine have VW tints from the factory and if you look at the piccie below you can deffo see a clear difference between the front and rear tints levels.
