Engine rattle on start
« on: 24 February 2004, 09:24 »
Can anyone help me with a new and annoying problem? I've done a search but couldn't find anything similar.

My engine is the 1.6 carb and on start from cold there is a loud rattle from the left (o/s) of the engine which dies away after a few minutes - although it's still there but quieter.

Could it be the cam belt? I know it needs changing soon anyway - 100,000 miles on the original.

Do you mean the timing belt end?
Could be the tensioner, try taking the cover off, and have a listen.
If it is then get it done straight away.

Yes it is the timing belt end, there is quite a loud non metallic rattle from that area on cold start which then dies off after say one minute.
I'll have a look asap. If it is the timing belt what should I replace in addition to the belt and tensioner? What special tools will I need?

change the timing belt, tensioner and v belt.
no special tools are required, however it is a lot easier to tension the belt with the proper vw tensioning tool.

I think the 5 cylinder Audi engines, have the timing belt on the water pump type, same as early smaller engine golfs and polos, ie. 1.0 and 1.3.

Ah yes I see that now.

The descriptions in the Haynes manuals look very similar. I was just hoping that I could change the Audi timing belt without having to remove the vibration damper on the end of the crankshaft, fitted with 258 lb ft...

The vibration damper is not fitted to that torque, thats the crankshaft bolt. The vibration damper (or pulley) should come off with the smaller allen key bolts, same as a golf.
