, and i wonder what a formula one car would go like with a Clutch!

A damn sight more interesting than the current situation where nobody makes mistakes with a missed change!

Formula 1 = "dull as dishwater", rally driving is where the fun is at...
IMHO of course!!

Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".

good call, vast majority use same gear tecnology as the dsg in the VW, they dont use clutch systems in rally cars, semi auto mostly

DSG Much better than the wife's "slushmatic" Mercedes auto...... you do put your foot down and wait half a second (thats with a V6!) then you go. But the V6 sounds nice.

On back roads I still at times miss a manual, but its great with the paddles and the quick gear changes. No feathering of the clutch on a tight hairpin though.
Bye Bye Edition 30

While you guys have been discussing DSG vs Manual, I've spent the last fortnight driving with DSG on autobahns and alps in Germany, Austria, Italy. I guess you know what I'm going to say, but before I do, let me say that I spent about the first 25,000 miles only using D and S modes but after some high performance driver training I now use the paddles and drive it exactly like a manual. Am now nearly at 39,000 miles.

DSG is very very different from any automatic. You are able to override at any time and the learning curve is quite steep because so many combinations of options are on offer. the only time I use D now is when in villages/towns/cities where it's more important to concentrate on not getting lost or being in the wrong lane etc. I can assure anyone who has doubts that driving fast on alpine twisties in DSG Manual is just as involving as a conventional manual and just a bit safer as it's good to have both hands on the wheel!

I have lived with DSG for two years now and I don't think I could ever go back to a normal manual.
The "thump" you get from the exhaust on full throttle up changes and the perfect heel and toe down changes still put smile on my face.
The fact that you can pull into small gaps in traffic knowing that you are not going to miss a gear change and have a 40 footer in your boot.
The fact that you can put it in "D" on the way to work, turn the radio up and follow all the other sheep and then take the "b" road home put it in manual and have a blast.

New M3 will Have DSG
New EVO will have DSG
2008 Porsche 911 will have DSG

Manual is so last year
