expect problems with any mk2 you choose. even the most highly maintained examples will still have faults! you should see between 21 and 35 miles to the gallon dependant on your type of driving, car setup and of course the routes you travel. But to be honest they are not the most practical cars in terms of expenses - but thats not why we own them

They're fine as daily drivers, so long as you keep on top of maintanance and you don't expect 40mpg when you thrash it. Economy on the motorway is excellent imo, i recently did 350 miles (mainly motorway 70-80ish, a bit of town) to 37 quid of petrol. Not bad if you ask me!

I've had a mk2 gti as a daily driver for the last 18 months now and apart from an alternator failure (could happen on any car) and a dodgy hall sender connection i've had no problems.

I've used botha mk1 and a mk2 as a daily driver and the mk2 I found a bit easier, probably cos it had PAS, but also cos it was a bit quieter and more refined...... prefer the mk1 if you want to go for a thrash tho...
