Undertaking on motorways - Petition
« on: 03 August 2007, 11:44 »
Hi all,

Ever been frustrated by drivers in lanes 2 & 3 not moving over to empty lanes and preventing you from overtaking?
If you think that "undertaking" should be legalised then, sign the petition on the Government website:-

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/undertake/

Cheers,

Wording of the petition:
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Pemit
"undertaking" on Motorways and Dual Carriageways

Much traffic congestion  is caused by drivers failing to use
lane 1 or 2 after overtaking slower vehicles. This leads to
frustration in drivers caught behind and can result in road
     rage and undertaking.

If "undertaking" were legalised, with a proper advance
advertising campaign, then all drivers will be aware that they
may be undertaken. The system works well in USA because all
drivers are aware of the possibility of being undertaken.

This would ease congestion on our crowded roads and make
drivers more aware of their surroundings.

agreed it is dangerous would take ages to adjust to new law and causes loads of accidents and would need lots more concentration, in other countries where its like that they are used to it and alway had it so its safer. tbh i dont find it a problem on mway dual carragy ways near me, there plenty more laws that need priority i feel

This has hit the spot with something that happened to me this morning on the motorway!!

A guy in a MERCEDES (Need i say more) stayed in the fast lane at 60MPH when he overtook a truck in the middle lane which was over taking another truck in the slow lane, but after he overtook the truck in the middle lane he continued to drive in the FAST lane at 60MPH. I think it should be legalised and i think there should be training for people who are not confident in doing it.

I think they are trying legalise undertaking the ODD car now and again but not all the time, this helps people avoid Traffic and helps keep traffic moving!

undertaking is perfectly safe! all it requires is that ALL drivers check the relevant mirror and blindspot before changing lanes, which is good practise anyway.

A guy in a MERCEDES (Need i say more)

I believe the correct term is "berc in a merc"

Regarding the undertaking? I'm not sure. Iv'e done it myself a few times, but only on really quiet motorways with people sitting in the middle lane for no apprant reason. And I agree, people should be checking all of thier mirrors.

But 'tis true, it would take ages to adapt to and I dont think they will ever legalise undertaking. I mean, some people speed a little everynow and again (when its safe and we know the roads / conditions are safe) but the government aren't going to up the speed limit or give us Autobahn freedom now are they? :undecided:

I had a long drive on the motorway yesterday (dont do motorway driving on a regular basis) and was sooo fustrated at peoples inability to drive on these things. I had the same problem Tweedie had (another Merc drive, funny that) I couldnt undertake as there wasnt enough room, but there was plenty of room for him to move out the way (if that makes scence) as he was sitting there doing 70 and the middle lane was clear for him to move into. SO FUSTRATING.

I could never comute on the motorway on a daily basis, after sitting in traffic and having to deal with retards on the road I think yesterdays trip to Oxford has taken a few years off my life in stress.

It would not be wise to make it legal. It would never undertake if there was even the smallest of chances of it ending in tears (like yesterday) but im afraid there are many, many other drivers out there that simply dont think or make a mistake and there would be more accidents, simple as.

If all lanes are taken I find the central reservation or hard shoulder works well.

from the highway code

Quote
242: Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

I do at as it pi55es me off when you've got some c0nt most of the time in a BM driving in the middle or outside lane for no reason.
