undertaking is perfectly safe! all it requires is that ALL drivers check the relevant mirror and blindspot before changing lanes, which is good practise anyway.

Like everyone does that anyway...

Undertaking people will just lead to total chaos on the motor ways, bad idea IMO

Interesting set of replies so far. I've also posted this on another forum where the general concesus of opinion is that undertaking should be allowed.

As it says in my posting/petition, before the law is introduced there would be an advertsing campaign (the Government is the biggest buyer of advertising in the UK btw). This would involve all forms of media.

Everybody knew about the smoking ban at least 9 months before it was due to come in - the same sort of campaign would ensure that every driver would be aware of this change in the law.

Could be a simple "strap line".... "if you don't want to be undertaken, move over". There is no reason why drivers should not be aware of traffic around them.

Let the debate continue......

those of us that live in the south, have no doubt driven in france at a minimum, we're able to drive over there without any problems, and that a similar situation as in the car you're passing in on the offside of you.

The main problem would be this:

Say someone did move over to let other traffic pass, but at the same time someone was coming up the inside lane to pass them...crump, we have an accident.  Enough of them already, people should be punished for sitting in the middle lane, undertaking should not be made legal - people are unobservent enough on the roads today, especially motorways.  If people are over taking them from all sides then all hell will ensue when they f**k it up.

My opinion is that the petition is a bad idea and stupid. The law should stay the same and instead the dumb fecks who lane hog should be educated by a think ad on the tv, etc or something similar!!

I drive a van all day and see some pretty sh!tty driving (mine included sometimes) and ive been stuck behind some old biddy (usually) doing 55-60 in the outside land loads of times. Once I was sitting behind this edlerly gent and he was doing the above speed and there was nothing on his inside lane and he sat there for 2-3 miles and I was fuming..BUT how many times have you been in the fast lane about to pull in when a bike comes through doing twice your speed. Happened to me loads and its only that ive double checked my mirrors that ive avoided pulling in and taking him off. If this was allowed the roads would be more dangerous than they are now IMHO

i had this above a few months back sum tw@t doin at least 120 -130 i was doin 80mph now to over take a car or start too  a sec later sum guy whizzes past i started to pull out to overtake then swereved back in bet he shat himself, at least he might think about the dangers now, sum people have a death wish this was in the day 7pm too with gaps in traffic, its his fault doing crazy speeds, dont sum bikers know if there doin 120 130 with traffic about we cant always see them 1 sec there not there next they are, like you say if there doin twice the speed, what chance do we have not much, this certanly made me think if i ever get a bike wont be driving like that with traffic about especially if there behind another car

Also picture this, your in the outside land or motorway/duel carriage way, your turnings coming up but the cars on the inside lane are going faster than you. Do you try and accelerate past and make a dangerous manouver or slam your anchors on and wait for someone to let you in or the long cue of cars to pass?

Remember that the nearside of vans also have a very bad blind spot so if they wanna pull into the midle lane and cars are coming past quicker van drivers aint gonna see em

remember that theres other road users to consider than yourself
