8v digi stalling when cold
« on: 31 July 2007, 20:35 »
Any advice for this ppl? Ive searched and read every thread on the subject but cant solve the problem. Cars fine after a 5min drive but untill then as soon as you take foot off for junction it stalls but only at night when the temp dropped a little but I know its gonna be a biatch in the winter. Ive just changed plugs and air filter tonight and its much worse, stalls, then after the  revs drop to to about 400 then bounce back up.
Last week I changed the blue temp sender for genuine vw, cleand out isv? valve for checked it was buzzing  and cleaned with carb cleaner but wasnt gunked at all, checked for vacumm leaks checked the wires underneath the injection unit and that it clicks..Its really only when cold that the problem lies. Im thinking possibly the warm air inlet in air flow meter, does that sound feasable or any other ideas what could be wrong or where to look?

Just been having another read throught the forum and this problems comes up quite a bit it seems
I s`ppose I need to check the timing and co mixture (where can I find one of these?) as per rubjonnys very usefull help guide. Just gotta build me confidence up before messing with anything I wish I hadnt..

This one does come up a lot!

Sounds like you have checked all the usual culprits though.

Is it a problem that's developed since you got the car or one that it's always had?

Either way setting up as per RubJ's guide is the most sensible next step.

Only had the car about a month but the idle has always seemed to drop to around 600 then pops back to 850-900. Ive only drove it a few times at night and each time its stalled in the same spot (roundabaout). I though maybe if I treated it to a few new bits it may behave itself..how wrong.Just taken  the air filter back off and put the old plugs in cos it got worse and until I can get round to sorting he problem I dont need it worse than it was..

I don't think a Digi has a WUR  :undecided:

If you've only just got it and have checked all the bits you listed i would definately get it timed and set up as per Jonnys guide so you know the basics are sorted and then go from there.

Well I would have thought the plugs shouldn't have affected anything unless your HT leads are dodgy. Can you have a check in the dark and make sure there is no visible arcing from any of the plug wires and dizzy?

My guess is an air leak from a split pipe that you disturbed when changing the filter. It's possible there is a crack/split that opens up when the pipe is bent in a particular way and not really visible.

Either that or the MAF has a problem, again that might have been disturbed when the air filter was changed.

Might also be worth chasing the wires from the throttle switch, MAF and temp sensors back to make sure there is no splits further up the wire.

Good luck!
