Battery light or generator light
« on: 28 July 2007, 08:03 »
Looked at the manual which comes with the car yesterday evening and it says when the cars ignition is turned on, the battery light should come on as well as the oil light and coolant gauge light. The oil light should go of as well as the coolant light after about two  or three flashes and the battery light once the car has been started. The problem is that the battery light dosnt come on at all when I put the key in the ignition and I know for certain that it did until I did some work last night. The first thing I did was remove the old radio.I didnt replace it with a new one yet and the wires are just trailing on the dash.Could it be that there is a wire coming from the battery to the radio and as it is not connected ,the battery light in the dash does not work or is it something more serious.I also removed the foglight switch and replaced it with a new one, maybe I disturbed some wires???

check the blue wire from the alternator, this is what controls the battery light :)

Checked the wiring and it seems fine.Must have blown the light in the dash when removing old radio. Can kind of remember a small ting ie bulb blowing when I touched the red wire(constant 12v) off my snips.Checked fuses etc etc, maybe when I reconect a new radio it will come back??Its not really a problem but small things like this really bug me.

There not bulbs in the dash, they are leds, there is a protection circuit for them against being overloaded like that. You need it really as its a good tell tale if you battery is low or the alt belt snaps, which they can do. I would trace the blue wire from the alt, you may find that someone could have routed it upto the stereo, if its not that the changing the led isn't too difficult, they just slide in the holders its just a tiresome process getting down to them!!

Sorry for all the questions, but why would they have routed to the radio?Should I be driving the car without this led working?

it would be a very silly thing to do, but you never know what some muppets are capable of!
