Noisy 150 TDI
« on: 18 July 2007, 09:17 »
Does anyone know how noisy/quiet a TDI150 engine should be? I've driven diesels (other makes) before but I expected this one to be quieter than it actually is. Seems to give off a 'tappet-like' noise when accelerating. Nothing extreme, I just wondered whether this is normal.

cheers!

depends on which gear you are in; if you're in a high gear but low speed then sometimes it can make a bit of a racket lol

have you checked your oil level to make sure thats ok?

Rhyso - Oil is at about 1/2 full.

The_Ridge - not sure if diesels have tappets but it's the sound of the valves opening and closing I think, a sort of high-tone knocking.

that doesn't sound quite right.

when mines idling you get the distinct diesel noise but thats no louder than anyother and with the windows up you can't really hear it.

under acceleration the main noise i hear is the turbo forcing air in, similar to an induction kit noise.

do you get the noise if you rev the car stationary?  and is the noise constant?

The main noise is the turbo, the 'tappet' noise is only really noticeable when revved i.e. the more it's revved the loader it gets. Maybe just low oil..

lets hope its the oil, the only other thing that springs to mind could be one of the engine mounts or something.

jeez, don't scare me! Pretty sure it's not that serious. I'm taking it to VW in a couple of weeks so will find out more then. Need to ask a question about the oil though, if I just want to top it up, what is the best oil to get, and should I go to VW to get it?

cheers

EDIT: assuming your on fixed life service like me

i use Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 you can get in in halfords see link

link to halfords

its not cheap but its specifically designed for the PD engines.  you can use the halfords own brand stuff just make sure its got 505 01 approval

i'm not sure how much VW charge for their oil but would have thought it would be more than halfrods

EDIT: the edge and edge diesel are pretty much identical so its easy to grab the wrong one.

think so, it's due a service in about 1500 miles. Was just going to top up beforehand.
