local vw specialist said my engine sounds louder than it should.  he suggested taking the pipercross filter out, as he noticed it was slightly bowed in the middle, so could be reverberating around in the air box. swapped for the old one, and doesn't seem to make a difference to my untrained ear. or he said could be the cam on the way out. 700 to replace he said. is that normal???

Ah sh!t
take the cam cover off and look for damage before doing anything else

700 is cheap, is that with parts? as they come to around 500  :undecided:

i'm not sure if it is with parts really mate- didnt ask too much about it.  having a service next month so will get vw to have a look at it. but yes will have a look myself over the next few days. been mullering the interior trim recently, so have to put all that back together too- looks like its been broken into!!!

I take it to a local guy (Feltham) who has a small garage, but for big jobs like the one I had he takes it to another place, who's name escapes me.  I'll see if I've got it on any paperwork anywhere.

Yes and how much was all this??? as I think mine is next!!!

For the following:
  • New camshaft
  • 8 New hydraulic tappets
  • Cambelt kit
  • water pump
  • Engine flushed twice
  • New oil (5w40!!) & filter

It cost aprx £1600 for parts and labour.
