1988 8v Engine Problem
« on: 19 February 2004, 13:48 »
I recently went to my car in the morning to go to work. I started the car, drove down the street and it stalled... Restarted drove further stalled. After about 10 stalls I got home and got it into my drive. The car now has an unusual idle status.

Basically i'm hearing a load knocking sound on the head, first impressions led to a bent valve. Also the revs are up and down, exhaust is making a pop pop pop sound and when the car revs it goes down and only just picks up from a stall.

Please advise on what I can do or where the problem may be.

Thanks.

sounds like the timing is out

i had this on my 16v when i changed the dizzy, forgot to mark the dizzy on the head, so when i first started it sounded exactly like what your describing

i just needed to rotate the dizzy a bit until i got it right

im not sure about the dizzy on 8v's

Loud knocking from the head doesn't sound good. I think if it were me I'd want to know where that knocking is coming from. If you've dropped a valve you don't want to rotate the engine!!!!

Hopefully its not that serious.

I've driven it and the power is off a little.
The knocking is quite worrying. Not sure what I can do without having a tuner come check it out.

did it do anything before the knocking or did it appear all of a sudden ?? ive had 2 timing belt tensioners go on me, and they both knocked, all though the bearings started squeaking loudly before they began banging  ! :o

Well 2 plugs aren't firing and the car is still driving... Thats 4v's down.
Gotta love the MK2 for its strength and durability.
I'm getting a compression test on monday, fitting new headgasket etc.

Fingers crossed I havent burnt the valves!!!

Problem solved, maybe not what I hoped for but solved never the less.
Oil seals had been fecked, something along those lines. Anyway, the engine would need re-borring and many other things doing.

Just bought a new lump for ?300, and i'm gonna straight swap it.
Gotta swap my stage 3 cam across tho, and change the timing, few things but hopefully should be done before next week...

Me a happy golfer again.

Now where did I put that beesting aerial?
