evil first gear
« on: 19 February 2004, 13:34 »
Can anyone explain the following problems I have getting into first.

Goes into first every time with engine running, car stationary.

Won't go into first when car is moving (with clutch in obviously)

I figure its a worn 1st gear synchro. Any other offers?

If you are just about to reply "linkage bushings" or "adjustment" then I suggest you need to read the above again.

Hope someone can clear this up.

Pete.

i think the idea of making it hard to get into first gear when moving is to prevent you from, say, dropping from 4th into 1st - its sorta like a fail safe i think

mine does exactly the same, as did my corsa before

Hi, my 1'st goes in fine when cold, but when warm it is really hard to get in if it been in neutral, I put it in to 3'rd then it goes in to 1'st smoothly. If I change strait to 1'st from 2'nd when stoping it goes in smoothly as well. No one has been able to explain what the problem is.

Mate, I am having problems that sound very similar to yours with my Mk3 Gti. See.....

Could be the same?
Mk4 PD150, Jazz Blue, nice! Puts my old Mk3 Gti to shame

Sounds a bit weird but plausible.  It's only hard to put in 1st from neutral when warm, not from any other gear. I think its a lot of money to pay out on the chance that there is a crack in the gear box. Does any one else have any theoryies

Blimey, what have I started?

Sounds the same as yours black_gti, I can get it into first whilst moving if I ram it but it doesn't sound nice.

And I'm not talking moving fast either, speeds that I think it should go into first easy.

Mines a mk1 though, bound to be some crunching on a 21year old gearbox!

Have heard about problems with clutch not disengaging properly. If gears change fine with engine off and crap with engine on then could be clutch. However thats not my symptoms.

I might try a general car forum, I figure this is a general gearbox problem, maybe not limited to VWs.

maybe a Ford Cortina forum?

Blue Mk2:- have you got a weighted shift rod (of a mk3) on your's it seriously dampens down the 2nd gear crunch
