How do you get the battery out?!
« on: 10 July 2007, 20:38 »
I'm trying to run a cable through from the engine compartment into the cabin,
Someone on a forum (not sure if it was here or not?) suggested that there is a grommit behind the battery - and that if I take the battery out I can simply push the cable through there and it will pop out above the passenger footwell.

My car has finally been in to VW and had the door panel they wrecked replaced - so now that everything is sorted, I'd like to get the last of my equipment installed!  I had a look at the battery a minute ago, but cant see how it comes out?

Can anyone shed any light?!

Does that not involve removing the glove compartment to get at the cable though?

Might go out to my garage and have a wee lookie though!!!

loosen the 2 10mm nuts on the terminals and then there is a 13mm bolt holding the clamp on, take this off and the battery will lift out.

You will have to reset your clock, radio code and one touch windows afterwards though

I think this is probably the same place as the one behind the battery.
Nice and easy - it aint!  Unless you have pixie hands!

If you pop out the wee bit of foam and pull back the rubber a bit you can get inside enough to see the 'bung' or 'grommit'.

The problem is that any normal person is going to have to actually take the wipers off (I think) in order to remove that bit of plastic under them - so that you can get your hand in properly and remove it.  You also need to feed the cable through, and then put the grommit back in so that no water gets through.

The way its positioned, it looks like it would be behind the battery too.  Personally, I think removing the battery would be a much less risky procedure than taking the wipers off!
Now if only someone would tell me how to get the battery out

Ah... thank you!!!!
Clock is no probs (I'm assuming using the buttons in the instrument dials?) and the stereo code doesnt apply as I have an Alpine.  What is the the one touch window?!

battery removal is in post above yours

If your feeling brave pop the covers off the bottom of the wipers, take off the 2 13mm bolts, close the bonnet. turn ignition on activate the wipers, turn them back off, turn off ignition and with igniton off press wiper stalk down, this should make the wipers stop vertically against the screen.

Lift the wiper arms one at a time and give them a wiggle side to side and the whole arms should then come off, then just remove the trim but be careful as its easy to snap so you would probably be best to just lift it up more

*edit*

One touch windows is the function you get when you tap the switch to make the window go completely from one end of its travel to the other, i.e completely open or completely closed

To reset it take the window to the top, release the button then press and hold the button again to go up and you should hear a click, go to the bottom and do the same process then the one touch is set

I dont know if I am that brave!  I dont mind taking things apart inside - but not to keen on hacking the outside apart!

To reset it take the window to the top, release the button then press and hold the button again to go up and you should hear a click, go to the bottom and do the same process then the one touch is set

I take it this just defines the top and bottom points so that the car knows where they should stop?

I'll have a go at taking the battery out tomorrow I think.  I tend to analyse everything and figure out what I'm going to do before actually doing it!  This sometimes means taking things apart twice - but hey ho!
I need to extend my cable first, as I dont think its going to be long enough to reach where I want it to anyway.
