So just peel off the whole rubber seal and squeeze my arm in?!

I need 3 core cable - so perhaps some mains cable would be strong enough with the flexibility I need.
Its dark now - so I'll hopefully have time to give it a go tomorrow.

yes, the panel will lift up enough if the rubber seal is totally removed.

Any cable with a bit of weight to it should do the trick.

Right...
I removed the rubber seal and had a go!
I managed to get my arm in with a pair of pliers and tried to grab hold of the grommit.  Unfortunately the same thing happened, and it fell down the back!
God knows how to find it again?!
Anyway - I pushed my finger in and tried to find the 'slit'.  I didnt seem to have one, so I pushed a pocket knife in through the foam and then pushed my finger in to expand it a bit and make sure it was right through.  I could then feel metal when I put my finger right in.

I threaded my cable in downwards and pushed about 1.5 meters through the hole.  I undid the 2 thumb screws in the footwell which allow the foam top bit to be moved.  I then pushed my hands up and grabbed about - and felt nothing!
I unreeled my cable and tried again.  I must've tried about 15 times in total, but every time there was nothing there.  Eventually it started raining - so I quickly put my rubber seal back in and gave up!  My cable is about 4mm thick and pretty sturdy.

My arms and hands are all shredded and bleeding  (the inside of the metal bits are sharp!) and I'm no further forward!  I'll need to try again soon - and see about filling the hole from the grommit with something!

not having much luck are you?

I can only suggest that once the cable is poked in, get you head under the dash with a torch and have a good look up between the plastic bits to try and see it. I seem to remember my cable ended up more towards the front of dash, so I just reached in and pulled it down the last little bit. I think that was the first attempt as well, so I must be very lucky then.

And the grommet will be stuck between the foam and the bulkhead somewhere so you wont get it back.

I went for it today!!!

Removed the glove box, and poked the cable through.  No wonder I could never catch it - it seemed to coil up as soon as it got through!
I routed it where I wanted with plenty of tie wraps so that it doesnt rattle about and then put the glove box back together. It was only 7 screws, but a bit of a pain trying to get it back in on my own!

I took it for a wee drive afterwards - and there are no rattles... so I'm pretty happy!

Now I need to get a replacement grommit to fill the hole!

Sorry for not replying - I've just moved house and the broadband has just been switched on now!
4 days without internet is a killer!

My cable is just into the ashtray area... its for my Micro RoadPilot.

Have you installed the Alpine / CanBus yet, and how'd you get on?
