I've been preparing for this day for a long time!!!
Since I ordered my GTI about 15 weeks ago, I've had full intentions of fitting an Alpine iDA-X001 head unit into it - hence why I didnt order any audio upgrades from the factory.
I surfed around various forums and discovered that the MKV uses CanBus - so I asked around a bit, and bought a Blaupunkt CanBus adapter from Racetech for about £70. The guy there told me this would sort all my wiring.
The stereo has been on back order for a while - and finally arrived on Friday... along with the Alpine KCE-300BT bluetooth adapter.
I've had quite a busy weekend, but have found the time to dissassemble my center armrest and run the USB cable into it - and take half the roof apart to fit my handsfree mic!
Today I decided to go for it and fit the rest!
I hacked the dash apart as described in several tutorials and everything seemed to be going well. I removed the standard stereo and plugged in my CanBus... and then in my stereo. It came on and seemed to work ok. I then tried my BT adapter and it worked too. I tied everything up nicely to prevent rattles and put the dash back together - and then went for a drive to test it.
All was well until it started to get dark... I my auto lights came on, but my stereo did not dim. I checked the settings, and it was set to dim. My stereo had a loose orange wire which was for the dimmer function. The CanBus also had an orange wire (but very poor instructions which didnt tell me anything) so I assumed the 2 oranges would go together - but perhaps not?
When I bought the CanBus I was assured by Ben that is would dim my stereo when the lights came on. Thats why I splashed out £70 instead of buying a standard Autoleads £10 adapter. Perhaps I've done something wrong? Or perhaps this CanBus isnt meant to do what I want?
Has anyone had a similar experience that can help please?!
