MKIV Speaker problem
« on: 18 June 2007, 14:22 »
got a Gamma headunit and 8 speakers in my MKIV; every now and again my main front speaker on driver's side doesn't work.  some days sound comes out and others it don't  :undecided: i've had a fiddle around with the connections at the back of the head unit but to no avail

I've taken the door card off and looked at the connections and all seems ok  :undecided:

i've got a feeling the speaker may be on its way out but was wondering if anyone has any other ideas  :undecided:

Cheers

Mine did this once and I spent ages trying to work out what was going on and did all the things you said. I then checked the settings and somehow I had managed to change the settings so all the sound was coming out the rear rather than the front.

This probs wont help you as yours is ok one day and not the next.

Before you rush off to buy replacement speakers, have you checked the integrity of the actual wire?

The connections at the reear of the head unit and to the speakers themselves may be mustard, but have you checked the state of the wores carrying the signal?

An intermittent fault possibly suggests a broken/shorting wire - check the wires within the rubber sleeve between the A pillar at inner door edge (where the wires leave the car and enter the door. It;s not unheard of that the wires in here become damaged, resulting in a intermittently broken signal.

cheers mate :afro: that will be my next point of investigation.  as you say, the fact its intermittant suggests a break in the connection somewhere. can't afford new speakers anyway so lets hope its something as simple as a break in the wire lol

if its any consolation the speakers are about £18 a peice from VW so not going to break the bank if it screwed, my guess its around the door gromit area, sometimes wires can snag and then get pulled and frayed when the doors are opened and closed. Pug 306s were renowned for this (all the 3dr wiring into the doors was about 2-3mm too short in the factory and they wore thin with age and split, lol)

i know it's stupid again, but on my old corsaasand papered down the connecters themselves, and hey presto.
