Front suspension

Hi there, It appears that my front damper needs replacing, problem is the strut appears to be a sealed unit so I can't simply replace the insert??  The only place I've been able to find that sells the strut complete with damper is the VW dealer but there £80!!!  Does anyone know where I can get one a bit cheaper than that?  Can I get a strut which is not sealed off a Mk2, replace the damper and fit that??

The original strut all forms part of the shock absorber.
When you buy the replacement, it is an insert that fits within the original strut.
