How do you actually get them out? I've not got the cap but do have the green bit that screws in and holds the cap. I've tried mole grips but no luck

With great difficulty

try a block of wood and hammer or persist with the grips.  It took me ages last time I did the timing.  They can be real fatherless sons

pm'd ya

humm, just been for a qick blast and clutch is fine so think i got away with that!

however the bloody pressure sensors aint solved ma problem...pissin hell, right dont wanna drop the sump

What's the symtoms of ya problem Rob, is it oil light and buzzer???
If so I'd recommend dropping the sump and cleaning the oil pump pickup. My g/f's motor developed those symptoms last year so I dropped the sump and was shocked by all the crud in the pickup, solved the problem completely. Don't worry about dropping the sump it's a piece of p!ss!!! So much so that after seeing the one in my g/f's car I dropped my sump for the hell of it just to be on the safe side. It turns out my was completely clean anyway but I did get to give the sump a good wipe out while I was there.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Agreed, and for complete peace of mind replace the oil pump, especially if its an 8v and not been done before. This is also easy, but the torque of the pump bolts is critical.

Best way i found of removing the green cap is to use a 'blunt' screwdriver and tap it around. Soak with a spray of WD40 first. It is a b!tch to start, but once it goes it gets easier. You'll be lucky if you don't damage it if you're wanting to 'salvage' one from a scrappy!

dropped the sump about an hour ago and cleaned the pick-up(no sh!t what-so-ever in it, but had a good look around the sump and cleaned that too...), didnt change the oil pump since i didnt have time, bloody dentist appointment.

drove it home and the light has now started to flicker..but not flash propperly... so topped the oil up since i changed the oil filter and thought that would solve it... haha, not a chance, revved it well into 3'000rpm and held for a second, and buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

running outta ideas, wishing i had changed the pump... although the flickering only occurs when im idleing and seems to be slightly in tie with the idle.... perhaps a fooked relay or circuit board?

cheers, rob

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!
