humm... a hole in my gearbox.. how worrying.
« on: 08 June 2007, 11:26 »
seems to me that the guy that built the engine before me was a bit of a t$@t...

just replace the two pressure switches and was having a browse around my engine, to my utter dis-belief, i found that at the top of my gearbow was a hole (see pic)

its threaded and so im jumping to the conclusion that it should have a cap... anyone know the part or number?

whats really worrying me is that i replaced the cyclinder head pressure switch and oil has run down the side of the head and possibly into the hole...

any ideas?

rob

all that goes there mate is a green cover that screws in with a removable cap in the middle for applying gear oil. dont worry to much if a bit of oil has got in. but make sure you check the level of your oil before putting the cap back on maybe some has come out and is a bit low inside

   Please under no circumstances try and top up your gearbox oil through that hole!!!
Sorry Dan but I have to correct you, the hole in that picture is to allow you to see the timing marks on the flywheel when setting up the ignition timing. Yes it should have a green plastic cover so you are right about that bit.
Dabill if you pour oil in through that hole you'll be pouring it directly on your clutch!!! I don't believe that's something you would want to do (unless you feel like paying for a new clutch)

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

The part number is: 020301132 should be available from VW still although scrappy is easier if you're going to one.
Actually you've reminded me that mine is missing, I completely forgot last year while I was degreasing my engine/gearbox and must have sprayed loads of water in there!!! My starter was a bit sticky for the first few journeys but then dried out, luckily my clutch survived!!!

How do you actually get them out? I've not got the cap but do have the green bit that screws in and holds the cap. I've tried mole grips but no luck
