Yes thats exactly what i mean! I cringed when i saw them all.

Tried the HU back in the GFs car and it works fine. I also noticed that the eject button flashes when the removable face is off in her car too. It does flash in a rhythm and is the same when connected in my car (didn't think it did flash in a rhythm originally but it must have been my eyes playing up!!) So the HU operates the same in both cars until the face is connected and then it wont switch on! Bit of a mystery i guess but will look into getting someone to run it straight from the battery...dont feel too confident doing it myself!

it is easy to do and it sounds like it is the way to go, the dodgy bit is when its run around the car temporary just to check if it works, you could do it properly without checking first but it could be a lot of work for nothing.
if it flashes with the faceplate off thats a bit more explainable but not, like i thought with the faceplate on and flashing on - off on the random!

have you installed an amp in a car before? because its almost identical to that.

have you looked at the dodgy connections to see if any bare wire is showing or if any of them are disconnected? it does sound like heyho said that the ignition, switch on power wire ( although not run through the ignition for you) may have disconnected but i have never heared the 'cd dragging in noise' coming from a HU with just the constant power connected, so it sounds a bit too dodgy to me, but then all HUs are different i suppose.

i would be happy doing it for you if your not too far away or willing to travel?

Hi, thats really kind of you but ive managed to sort the problem out myself!

Got in from work and decided to sort out all the wires and their connector boxes so it was all a bit neater. Noticed a cable which wasnt connected to its corresponding one from the back of the HU. I connected that and the stereo now works fine!! The previous owner has made a bit of a bodge job though as he's bridged a couple of cables to run to a single one...doesnt seem to be causing any probs though!!

Cheers for all the advice!

the cables he has joined together will be the switched and permanent live, thats why your stereo worked with the ignition off, there is nothing wrong with that in itself but i would re-do the dodgy white connector blocks, with some bullet connectors at least, if it was my stereo i would anyway!

glad you sorted it.
