Morning all,

These forums are a bit addictive!  I've picked up so much useful info over the last few days, so thanks!

Anyway, what does everyone do to stop their pride-and-joys getting stolen? It's my biggest worry as, let's face it, they look hot parked up in a car park, etc! Our light-fingered friends might just take a bit of a fancy to our babies.

I've got a steering wheel lock (Disklok), a tracker and the usual VW factory stuff. Do you think that's enough?

I'd be interested to hear everyone else's opinons.

Cheers
John

Hmmm

I have two close circuit cameras.....
I have a standard car alarm....
I have alarm sensors....
I have a big dog sign saying beware....of the dog.....
I have spikes on my walls...

Need more help still??

Truthfully. I have just a basic alarm system. Involving cameras etc in the garage and outside, also have electric garage doors and signs all over the place. We have never been broken into.

Another rule in our family is that the car is NEVER left outside. it all started with our VR6 (What a Car...) and a cat getting into a fight with the bonnet... Since then our cars are only outside when we are around. Unless of course we are shopping then my ma always parks near the security offices.

mines left on a street in london .  I thought disc locks and such like were a waste of time, as any hardened tea leaf can get them off in a matter of seconds.

I know this is going to kick off another security thread but...

I think you can put what you like on they are just a deterent. There has been a lot of discussion here on trackers and they seems to be the way to go to give yourself some reassurance. But the crims are shameless bastards, a few weeks ago they tried to get in to the house to get the keys and hence disable everything ( I didin't have a tracker). They silently broke the lock out of the front door and only due to the fact I always put the house alarm on they were in. They opened the door and the alarm went off and the legged it.

My point being that you can put sterring locks and alarms on all you want but if the get in to the house for the keys and the house is'nt alarmed the only thing that might get it recovered is a tracker. Blowers from this forum had his nicked from the gym http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=55850.0 but got it back eventually.

I would imagine a VW alram, Tracker and steering lock they will go elsewhere.

Most cars now are pretty theft proof - the only way to get them is by crane/tow-away or by nicking the keys from you aor your home -there are many cases of these nowadays.

Considering you and your family etc - it's best to let the scumbags take the keys and go.

You could consider fitting a Clifford 950 (I think) - it is a full alarm system with "blackjax" - an anti car jacking module. The toerags nock the car (using your keys) and drive off - after about 1/4 or 1/2 mile the lights start flashing and the siren wails and when they next stop the car or slow to below 10mph the car just dies on them. They are sufficiently far away from you not to come back and besides, the old bill may be on their way (well they might).

There are other systems that alert your mobile phone and you can hear what the barstewards are saying..or smokecloak type devices too.

If you've got a tracker on it too then I don't think you have many worries.

According to the instruction manual, the Bluefin handset can be used to immobilise your car - plug it in and it removes all the software so you can't start it! Can't say I've tried it yet and not sure how long it would take either... might not be very convenient for day to day use but if your parking your car up for any period of time it could be useful...just an idea!

All GTI's have an incline sensor built in to sound the alarm when someone tries to lift your car.

The only extra device I have is a tracker as I see that as a way of getting the car back quickly, rather than stopping it getting nicked in the first place.

The general rules I live by are:-

  • NEVER...EVER..leave anything visible in your car - even a plastic shopping bag can raise a thiefs interest.
  • Always double check that the car is locked when you walk away from it - sounds bl00dy obvious, but some of my workmates have learnt this the hard way.
  • I always park the car in the garage and my wife's cheap Punto on the drive, so anyone wanting the golf has to get past the Punto, a reinforced garage door and then the garage alarm system. If they want to break into the house to get to the keys, it too is zone alarmed overnight.
  • I opting for the rear tints, so that it is harder to see into the car in the first place.
  • I try to park in well lit areas and if possible close to CCTV camera's.
  • At work my car is safe enough as I park on a large secured site with a guardhouse, security gates and CCTV.

Personally, i think the achilles heel with a Hot hatch being nicked is being mindfull of where you keep your Car keys. Thieves have been know to break into the house just to find the keys hung on the hook by the front door or on the kitchen side, BY VERY CAREFULL!!!  these cars cant really be hot wired to get going, they are useless without the keys.So keep your keys in a safe place, just ask blowers, he had his GTi stolen in 72 hours!!.
